How To Choose A Laptop For Gaming Under 500?

Choosing a budget gaming laptop under 500 boils down to what you’re looking for in a laptop. Some people want something lightweight, as they plan on carrying it to and from work or school. While others need more power so they can multitask.

Yet, there are a few questions you will need to find answers to, like, what games do you plan on playing? Will you be using it for work? If so, will you be carrying it in your bag? Is it for school, college or uni? If so, you may need a budget laptop with a 256GB SSD instead of one with only 128GBs.

Read on as we highlight what to expect at this price point. I mean, things like how much RAM to expect, how many cores, how much storage, size of the budget laptop, and other features you should look out for.

The Main Features To Consider With A Laptop Under 500?

The most important features you should consider when searching for a budget gaming laptop under 500, are the CPU (processor). And the faster the processor, the better the performance. If you didn’t know, processor speeds are in GHz, and the higher, the better.

You should also consider the RAM (Radom Access Memory). A light gaming laptop that has 8 GB RAM would be best. Although, one with 4 GB is ok and would run most light video games. But check if you can add more RAM at a later date.

Next up is the storage (SSD or HDD). A good budget laptop under 500 should have at least 256 GBs of SSD storage. But, one with a 512 GB SSD would be so much better, but you may have to pay a bit more for that. 512GBs of storage will allow you to download and save twice as much data and store many more games, files and photos. With that, you won’t have to worry about storage in the future.

Ok, there are other features, like how many USB ports the laptop has. Does a cheap budget laptop have a super-fast USB Type C port? Which are great for charging mobile phones and tablets.

So let’s continue…

What Are The Size and Weight Options?

A budget laptop under 500 pounds will most likely have only an Intel or AMD CPU with integrated graphics. This means, there’s no dedicated card inside that must be cooled down. So there’s no need for extra cooling fans or heat sinks inside, adding additional weight to the laptop.

Plus, most cheap laptops under 500 would have SSD’s and not HDD’s as the storage solution, again less weight. The difference in weight between a hard disk to a solid-state drive is night and day, plus, they’re less noisy. Not to mention, much faster.

On average, a budget laptop at this price point would weigh around 2kg or 4lbs. The most common size would be either 14 inches or 15.6 inches, so they would be perfect for students because it’s lightweight.

Plus, compact enough to fit inside a backpack without taking up too much space. And still managing to offer a decent screen size for working on essays or homework assignments. Also, a 15.6-inch display is an excellent size for gaming or watching movies.

Choosing The Processor For A Gaming laptop Under 500?

The best gaming laptops under 500 will come equipped with either an Intel or an AMD processor. Most of these will have integrated graphics that will run games at 1080p resolution on low settings.

They would be either dual-core which means it has two cores. Or quad-core, which means it has four CPU cores. Yet, there are some budget laptops under 600 with six-core CPUs. Just like the 14-inch HP laptop listed above. It boasts an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processor with a max CPU speed of 3.8GHz. Now that’s some power for light video gaming or other graphics-related tasks, like image editing with PS.

My advice would be to grab a cheap budget laptop with at least a quad-core processor, only because I see dual-core processors becoming obsolete in the not too distant future. Plus, a budget laptop with a quad-core processor would allow you to do so much more in terms of running apps and programmes simultaneously. But if your budget will allow going for one with six CPU cores and 8GB RAM.

How Much Storage Should I expect With Cheap Gaming Laptops Under 500?

A 128 GB SSD would be the very least amount of storage you should expect for a gaming laptop under 500. But you will find other options like 256GBs, or 512GBs and this amount would be best. It would offer you so much more for files, photo’s, videos and more.

For most people, 256 GBs of storage would be ok, including college students and school leavers. Also, gamers who play one or two games on Steam. But with that amount of storage (256gbs), you may find yourself clearing room more often than not for new files etc, which can get annoying.

My advice would be to go for a budget laptop with a 512GB SSD. My current gaming laptop, the HP Omen 15, came with only 512 GB of SSD storage and after six months of gaming and working, I never ran out of space.

It was only recently that I decided it was time to buy a 2nd SSD. Simply, because I found myself deleting old videos and images that were redundant. Which is something I hadn’t done before, But as I said, it took six months of daily use to get to that stage.

Moreover, understanding how much storage you need on your laptop would depend on what you do with it. But most people would be fine with only 256 gbs, whereas others who do other things than play games like downloading and watching movies would enjoy more.

Plus, there are always external storage options like cloud storage that is free up to a certain amount. Also, flash storage can be a good cheap option and could be a lifesaver for some.

How Good Is A $500 Gaming Laptop?

A $500 gaming laptop should be able to run Minecraft (somewhat smoothly) or other games that don’t need a lot of demanding graphics. It’s the perfect laptop for school, work, and browsing Facebook. It can take care of office work like word processing and spreadsheet building.

However, do not expect to use this laptop for anything remotely intensive like graphic design or video editing (unless you are really patient!). You should also buy the laptop from somewhere reputable. To get the best specs without paying too much money toward unnecessary features.

Look at sources like Amazon, PC World, or Best Buy. Read reviews, comparison shop with help from friends if necessary, which will help you find the right product in your price range!

Choosing the right budget laptop under 500 may take some towing and froing. But make sure you get one with enough storage (256GB SSD) enough memory (at least 4GB RAM, 8GB Better). Plus, a decent speedy processor, an Intel 11th Gen or an AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU would be best. Good Luck!!

What Is A Good Budget Laptop For Gaming?

A Good Budget Laptop For Gaming would be the one that meets your gaming needs. The Omen by HP is a strong contender for this title, I can vouch for that. It should provide you with good performance when game playing. Plus, it has plenty of storage space to store your edited photo’s, music, and videos.

All the features you need in a good budget laptop are present in this model from HP’s Omen series. Tenth generation Intel i7, or AMD Ryzen 4000 series processors with NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards with 6GB GDDR5 memory. 16GB of RAM for your PC games and content streaming or whatever it is you do, it would be a breeze.

But, if we’re talking about a good budget laptop under 500 or 600. It would have to have 512GBs of storage, 8GB 3200MHz RAM, an Intel 11th Gen Quad-Core processor or an AMD Ryzen one that is similar. Along with a 15.6” display plus features like a USB Type-C port and Wi-Fi 6 (2×2) and Bluetooth 5.0 combo. Finally, it has a good build, is strong, and is durable.

The one I have in mind is the ASUS VivoBook 15.6 Laptop listed above.
