HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop Review NVIDIA RTX 2060

HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop Review NVIDIA RTX 2060

Finally, I have completed the HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop review with the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H and the RTX 2060 NVIDIA graphics card. The HP Omen 15 is in no way the slimmest or the lightest RTX gaming laptop on the market. However, this is a laptop you can throw into any bag without too much hassle.

However, neither the weight nor the thickness was the deciding factor, why I decided to buy and review the HP Omen 15 gaming machine. Long before thinking about the weight or size of the laptop. There were other hurdles I had to jump. The first being, deciding on the CPU. An Intel processor or AMD processor? Which would be better?

Why? Because the CPU is a hugely important factor, the laptop will not just be for gaming. But highly important? My work plays a huge role, so I needed the machine to help design, edit and create graphics, as much as I needed the laptop to play the latest AAA games on the go.

Previously I was under the impression, an Intel CPU would be better for graphics editing and other workstation tasks, or so I thought. Because so far, the HP omen 15 gaming laptop review with an AMD 4000 series processor has been fantastic.

Superb for graphic editing using Adobe Photoshop and video editing using Adobe Rush. And, I have also enjoyed a solid gaming performance playing Call of Duty Warzone.

Gameplay during the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop review

During the HP omen 15 gaming laptop review, I decided to play was Call of Duty Warzone. And as you can see from the video below, I had an enjoyable afternoon playing the FREE Battle Royale online video game.

The first thing I have noticed during the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop review. Was that the Omen laptop is more than capable of handling high fidelity gaming. However, you must have the required RAM, and only then you take out multiple enemies, and as a result, you can also win at Warzone, just like me on my first day.

What do you get with the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop?

Inside the HP Omen 15 Box on arrival

On arrival, I was a little nervous, not sure if I had made the right decision. £1200 is a lot of money to spend when you are not 100% sure. And especially now, with what is going on in the world. However, once I opened the box, the fears that I had, were quickly washed away.

Inside, I found the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop sat next to a 200 W Slim Smart AC power adapter. The adaptor weighs about half a kilo and has an oblong shape, and will sit neatly and flat behind the laptop when charging. And the uncommon shape allows you to easily slip the charger into one of the side pockets of your backpack. So it wouldn’t take up too much space.

Also supplied was a quality country power cord to enable you to plug the laptop directly into a standard outlet. For the record, the HP Omen laptop does charge in no time at all.

HP supplied a booklet containing setup instructions with details about HP user guides, and they are hugely important for those who are unsure how to set up WIFI or use the free McAfee LiveSafe subscription,

Alternative HP Omen Specs

HP omen gaming laptops are available in a variety of sizes and specs. My HP Omen has a 15.6 panel with an AMD Ryzen 7 4000 series chip. However, you may prefer a 17″ gaming machine. Therefore, the HP Omen 17 below would be perfect. Additionally, there is a slightly more powerful RTX 2070 graphics card. Check Availability Amazon.

This laptop is an alternative HP Omen 15 to my AMD Ryzen 7 4800H machine. The laptop comes with a faster single-core Intel Core i7-10750H processor. Also, a slightly more powerful NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics card. Including 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

Review of the 15.6 HP Omen gaming laptop design and appearance?

HP Omen 15 with an RTX 2060 GPU and an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Processor

The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop is a combination of plastic and aluminium. At first glance, I was impressed with how there were no sharp edges, and even the corners of the HP Omen laptop are nicely rounded.

And the Omen 15 looks the part with a grey, hard plastic throughout the build. And the keyboard and panel are sat in an aluminium frame. Also, the laptop was not as heavy as a thought or as thick. Noticeably, the chassis was smooth to the touch, a kind of dark grey colour. And HP calls this Mica Silver, and to me, it is dark grey.

As you can see, from the image below, on the lid of the laptop, there is a nice-looking gradient blue to purple diamond Omen logo. As I am not too keen on the big messy logo’s you get with some gaming laptops, this one is perfect.

Overall a nice-looking and sleek professional gaming laptop. The machine seems sturdy and weighs just 2.37kg and is 36cm in width, 24 cm in length, and 2.25cm high. So not the heaviest or the biggest by any means.

Nice-looking gradient blue to purple diamond HP Omen 15 logo

HP 15 Gaming Laptop showing Diamond on the lid

When you lift the lid of the laptop there is movement, a little bendy and shakey, although, the 2-inch hinges are wide enough, also, strong enough to help stabilize the laptop. And, you can do this with one hand, and, tilt the laptop a full 90 degrees without any problems.

As you can see from the image below, the base houses a large grille stretching the length of the laptop. And, there is a small vent on the right side to give you plenty of air flowing through the system. Ideal for gaming scenarios.

The HP Omen benefits from the tempest cooling technology, with 3-sided venting and 5-way airflow. And, since the day the HP Omen landed on my desk, the temperature of the laptop has been low.

And there are two rubber strips on the base that run almost the width of the chassis at the front and back. Allowing the laptop to rest comfortably and easily on my desk and on my lap.

And if you like to get their hands dirty? You can easily unscrew the eight screws attaching the base to the laptop and upgrade the hardware. And add additional storage or RAM to help improve performance.

Lifting the HP Omen 15 laptop lid to reveal 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard

When you lift the lid on the HP omen gaming laptop, you are presented with a 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard, that benefits from outlined WASD keys. And, you can easily customize the keyboard using the Omen gaming hub software. One-click of the omen key situated top right of the keyboard, the hub software is activated for you to customize to your heart’s content.

The Omen hub allows you access to many useful features. Including your game time and information on your installed games, your system vitals and finally, your laptops performance controls. Therefore, helping to keep you one step ahead of the playing field.

Furthermore, the HP Omen 15 has no number pad or fingerprint reader, but for this price point, did I expect that? Maybe not.

Other than that, the power-on key location is on the top right of the keyboard, which is handy. However, it may take some time to get used too. Although I have read that some HP Omen reviewers think you might have issues by accidentally powering off your laptop when clicking the backspace button, which is just below the power-on key.

But, I can tell you now that you do not need to be concerned because you would need to hold the power key for at least 2 seconds for the laptop to power off. Therefore, making it near impossible to accidentally turn off your gaming laptop during gameplay.

HP Omen has smooth and snappy keys

Other features to mention, the arrow keys are on the right of the keyboard with a 1.5-inch space above to allow your fingers to rest when typing for long periods. And, I have found this very useful, great for playing games where you would benefit from using the arrow keys instead of using the WASD keys or any other task.

The trackpad is a decent size, about one-third of the width and seems accurate. Although, this is not something I would use too often, just when testing for this article. And the position is slightly off dead centre and doesn’t seem to get in the way when typing.

Finally, the keys are smooth and seem fast and snappy, with a short actuate distance. Also, you can also take advantage of the 26-key rollover anti-ghosting technology HP has generously given us.

Overall, the HP omen 15 comes with a decent keyboard, snappy, responsive, and a well thought out layout. And, gets a thumbs up from me.

HP Omen 15 comes with a 144 Hz IPS FHD anti glare display and wide-view 720p HD camera

The HP Omen 15 Ryzen 7 panel is impressive, a micro-edge FHD anti-glare display with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Therefore, ensuring I should enjoy smooth and crisp gameplay. And, yet, it has not disappointed.

The panel is surrounded by a three-sided narrow bezel, which leaves room at the top for the wide-vision 720p HD camera great for video chats with family members or your teammates due to the 88-degree, wide-angle field of view.

I decided to play a fast-action shooter game, and my favourite Call of Duty Warzone to put the 144Hz panel through its paces.

And as you can see from the video above, my HP Omen has allowed me to enjoy an admirable gaming performance. And there has been no flickering or blurring. Also, I did not see any signs of screen tearing. All in all, very impressed with the 144Hz display HP has kindly given the Omen 15.

That said, the screen is bright, and the viewing angles are superb. And, the lid can be titled 90 degrees, and still, I can read my page from sitting upright.

Additionally, the colour temperature is high, and the colours seem accurate. And with a screen ratio of 16:9, and a pixel density of 142 PPI and a maximum brightness of 300 nits, making the panel very good for this price point.

And you will also benefit from 72% NTSC, which is now standard on the best high-quality monitors.

Finally, to find a gaming laptop with a 144Hz panel of this quality for this price, allowing me to play the latest games and especially a game such as Call of Duty Warzone, is superb. Therefore, I could not be happier.

So Far, so good!

The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop review: The laptop is superb for video editing and creating graphics.

On reviewing the HP omen for video and graphics editing, I have been impressed. Although this is a gaming laptop, I need more.

As I have said before, my HP Omen is not just for gaming. I must be able to run graphics software comfortably, software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

And for the record, to download and install Adobe creative cloud, setup Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Rush using this laptop, it took me about 5 mins.

Was it worth it? Yes, it most definitely was. My image and photo editing look superb and so much better than my old Intel i7 laptop could do. Therefore, answering any concerns that I had over buying an AMD gaming laptop over an Intel machine.

HP Omen comes with impressive Bang & Olufsen speakers

The display is joined by, so far, the most impressive feature, the audio. And, the Bang & Olufsen speakers are a nice treat to look forward to when you get your HP Omen gaming laptop.

The sound is loud but not too bassy, and when I was gaming, the sound effects in the background were really-good, and the in-game music did not sound too tinny.

And to be honest, you would have the choice of either using your headset or without, and you would still have an enjoyable gaming experience.

Hopefully, I can improve the sound further by testing the HP Audio Boost and Smart Amp Technology you get with the Omen 15 gaming laptops.

And, I did test the speakers by watching a movie with the kids without hearing any complaints. And trust me, they would tell me if the movie we saw did not sound how it should or even look right, for that matter.

How good is the hardware: The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop Review?

The AMD RYZEN 7 4800H Central Processing Unit

On the inside, the HP Omen 15 has found room inside for a Ryzen 7 4800H processor, with mouth-watering eight CPU cores and a humungous sixteen threads.

The CPU has a base clock speed of 2.9 GHz and a turbo average of 4.05 GHz with a max boost of 4.2 GHz. And 8 MB L3 cache. The AMD Radeon™ Integrated Graphics is a bonus and would give you an alternative graphics solution, although not enough to take on the latest game titles.

The HP Omen 15 is the first gaming laptop with an AMD 4000 series laptop I have had the pleasure to deal with, and so far, so good. I mean, everything I do, whether it is, Photoshop work, online gaming, browsing the web or writing long blog posts using Microsoft office, has been a breeze.

And sometimes with three, four, or even five applications running at once, without experiencing problems. I can only put this down to the quality of the AMD Ryzen processor and all that comes with it.

On testing the Ryzen 7 4800H Processor

On testing, I was amazed to receive an outstanding single core score. Something I thought an AMD processor wouldn’t give me. Putting to bed the concerns I had over AMD or Intel. And this result sent the Intel machine packing for good.

The Ryzen 4800H mobile processor not only demolishes everyday tasks but also office apps, audio, and video playback. And it can handle typical workstation tasks requiring strong multi-core CPU performance just as well.

My bench score of 90.4% was even more pleasing. It was 6.5% above the average bench of 84%. The scores were taken from over 23,000 users with the same CPU on their gaming laptops. A thumbs up to the HP Omen for getting more performance out of the Ryzen 7 4800H processor.

And the Ryzen 7 CPU suitability for 3D gaming score was just as impressible high.

The NVIDIA RTX 2060 Graphics Card

HP paired the Ryzen CPU with an impressive NVIDIA RTX 2060 mobile ray-tracing graphics card with 6GB GDDR6 dedicated memory. Not the latest or the fastest mobile GPU from NVIDIA, a decent graphics card all the same.

Again I was happy with my benchmark score of 68.6%, which is a decent 3D score. The GPU will handle the majority of the latest AAA games at high resolutions and ultra level settings.

I decided to put the GPU to the test playing Call of Duty Warzone, and over 15 hours of gameplay on relatively high settings, I averaged over 100 fps. Not bad, but, since then I have tweaked the settings, and, now I am averaging 130-140 fps.

Also, there is so much more I can still do to get more out of my graphics card. And, I have yet to drill into the NVIDIA control panel to play around with what NVIDIA has to offer. But, for now, enjoying 100+ frames per second on my 144Hz monitor is all good fun.

Also, I am looking forward to testing the RTX 2060 graphics card with some of the other demanding game titles. And, I have yet to take another game that supports ray-tracing.

Like, the Ray-tracing Minecraft, or maybe I could get my first HP Omen dub in 3D Fortnite, now that would be fun.

Overall, a decent graphics card capable of delivering 100+ frames per second in most of today’s games at 1080p with maximum settings, with some gaming @1440p also possible. And, would satisfy you if gaming @1080p is for you.

All in all, the laptop is excellent value for money, and I would most definitely recommend the Omen 15 gaming laptop to anyone with a thirst for portable gaming.

Does the HP Omen have enough RAM for Gaming?

The HP Omen 15 components are concluded, by 16 GB DDR4 RAM, clocked at 3200MHz. Consisting of 2x8GB sticks filling the two slots available. For now, this is ok. However, it will not be long before my hands would need to get dirty upgrading to 32 GB, if not 64 GB RAM.

Although 16 GB RAM is a great starting point for gaming, and in the gaming world, it’s known as the sweet spot. However, a gaming laptop with 8 GB is still, ok, just not enough for the more demanding game titles.

That said, I have yet to utilize the full-memory. Even thou, there have been times I had Photoshop, Microsoft word, several webpages, and my email client running all at once. Without affecting my laptop’s performance.

However, when running Call of Duty Warzone alongside my Radeon software, the memory was tipping 90%, but Warzone is a massive game and requires at least 12 GB RAM alone.

On Testing the memory sticks

HP Omen 15 Western Digital Benchmark

On testing the RAM that I received with my HP omen 15 gaming laptop, it was pleasing to find the memory sticks are high quality.

They are two sticks of 8 GB Samsung M471A1K43DB1-CWE 260-pin NON-ECC SODIMM RAM Memory, some of the best on the market. And highly sort after.

On further research, there are several fantastic 5-star reviews regarding the quality of the memory sticks. And possibly, why they received an admiring 104% benchmark over Multi-core and Single-core tests. And way above the average 88% on the same model.

Extremely pleased to see the hardware HP supplied with the Omen 15 is high-quality. And this will make a big difference in how well the gaming laptop will perform.

How much storage you get with the HP Omen 15 laptop?

We all would love endless amounts of storage, so you don’t have to worry about what photos to save or what files to delete. And gone are the days of bulky hard drives slowing down your experience. Although still cheaper than the equivalent SSD.

When researching to buy a laptop, whether it’s for gaming or work, checking the storage solution is always a priority. And there are two questions I look to answer every time. Is it an SSD or an HDD, and can you add more storage if needed?

Most budget gaming laptops will have at least a 256 GB SSD. Ok, it is not the end of the world, but you must be able to add more, or it’s not worth considering.

The HP Omen 15 comes with a 512 GB SSD, and there is no room to install an HDD to use as your secondary storage. However, two M.2 NVMe slots support PCIe x4 drives, so you can add a 2nd SSD or upgrade the one that comes with the HP Omen.

And this is a much better secondary storage solution than using a hard disk drive. But you will have to pay a bit more for the extra storage, but that’s not a bad headache to have.

If more storage is what you need, the HP omen 15 is available with a 1TB SSD. Although, this gaming laptop comes with an Intel 10th Gen processor.

On testing the SSD

HP Omen 15 SSD Benchmark

HP has treated me to a Western Digital NVMe 512GB SSD, not the biggest but one of the fastest and performing way above expectations.

On testing, I scored a resounding 267% for sequential read/write speeds and high results for random 4k and deep queue 4k. And just like with the other hardware components, I could not be happier. The hardware HP has squeezed into the Omen 15 is 2nd to none.

The Western Digital SSD is suitable for heavy workloads, fast boots, and responsive applications. Also, much quicker transfer of multi-gigabyte files than many SSD’s tested.

Finally, the SSD is another component I will be upgrading soon, even thou 512 GB of storage is a good starting point. Shortly I plan to download more games, and they will eat up more storage. And especially with the size of the latest game titles. Let’s take COD Warzone, for instance, a game that requires over 100 GB of space, And that is already 20% of what I currently have.

If only HP supplied a 1 TB version of this Western Digital SSD due to the high quality of this storage device. But that is probably expecting a bit too much for this price point.

Is the HP Omen 15 a good laptop for gaming?

My HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop with COD Warzone Playing

The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop review so far has shown the Omen 15 is superb for gaming. And, it has been tough to gather the will-power to knock back the temptation to flick on my Blizzard app and blast out some COD Warzone.

Besides, I had to improve my rankings on the new account I had to create with the new HP Omen 15 laptop. It was just too much to resist.

Also, because of the new account, I had to start the process to unlock the weapons all over again. Nightmare! because I had the Kilo AR with the Kar 98 fully-unlocked. My two best Warzone friends. And, if you have played the game before. I’m sure you will know what I mean.

Without them, I would not be ready to jump out of the plane and enter Verdansk with my new HP Omen gaming laptop for the first time and take on 150 game hungry Warzone players.

So to answer your question. Is the  HP omen 15 with the Ryzen 7 4800H processor and the NVIDIA RTX 2060 graphics card good for gaming? It is a resounding YES!

Testing my HP Omen playing Warzone Battle Royale

Call of Duty Warzone is a perfect example to test out the HP Omen 15 to see how good the laptop is for gaming due to the game being graphics intensive and just a big game in general.

To run Warzone smoothly, you need to have at least 100 GB of available storage space, 12 GB RAM, and a discrete GTX 900M series mobile graphics chip. Also, an Intel i5 7th Gen mobile CPU or the equivalent AMD CPU. Possibly an AMD 4000 series processor.

Luckily the HP Omen I have purchased has the hardware above these requirements. Therefore, Warzone should run like a dream allowing me to enjoy a stutter and blur-free gameplay and experience the frames per second required to have some fun.

As you can see from my exploits in the video above, I am most definitely having fun, and the win was just the icing on the cake.

HP Omen 15 with an Intel i7 CPU and NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics card

Reviewing the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop has been enjoyable, and the Omen 15 laptop is one of the more affordable RTX 2060 based laptops on the market.

The Omen 15 is decent in many areas beyond its price. And the laptop has enough graphics ability to play the latest AAA games titles with ease. In addition, to have a sleek and stylish exterior, also, the HP Omen features a bigger fan size than most at this price point.

Making the cooling system one of the biggest things we can take from the HP Omen 15 review. Surprisingly the Ryzen 7 47800H CPU beats the Intel i7 10750H you can get with the other HP Omen laptops available, amazingly, by all but only a few user bench results. And the HP Omen is available with the more powerful NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics chip.

The Omen 15 outperforms similar spec laptops

The HP Omen outperforms the Acer Predator and the Acer Nitro with the same RTX 2060 GPU with the Unigine Benchmark 3D testing, albeit, with a different processor. And there are a plethora of ports to keep you, and most importantly, all your devices happy.

Finally, I am looking forward to testing the laptop with other game titles. And maybe try my hand at Minecraft and create my very-own ray tracing-enhanced worlds. Or, dust the cobwebs off my building techniques, and have a crack at Fortnite.

Overall I am happy with the HP Omen 15. And would I recommend this gaming laptop? That would be 100% yes every time.
