Finally, completed the review of the superb HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop paired with the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H and Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card.
The Omen 15 laptop is in no way the slimmest or the lightest Nvidia RTX gaming laptop on the market. But neither the weight nor the thickness was the deciding factor, why I decided to buy this machine.
Long before thinking about the weight or size of the laptop there were other hurdles I had to jump. The first being, deciding on the CPU. A hugely important factor, because it’s not just be for gaming. But, highly important?
My work plays a huge role, so I needed a decent gaming laptop to help design, edit and create graphics, as much as I needed the laptop to play Call of Duty Warzone. And previously I was under the impression, an Intel CPU would be better for graphics and other workstation tasks, or so I thought. Because so far, this AMD laptop has been fantastic.
In this post, I will review the HP Omen 15.6 gaming laptop and highlight, just how good this laptop is for high-fidelity gaming. And superb for graphics and video editing using Adobe software.

Gameplay With the HP Omen 15 Gaming Laptop
During the HP Omen 15.6 gaming laptop review, I decided to play Call of Duty Warzone. This game is known to be highly intensive and will push the laptop to it’s limits.
The first thing I noticed during the review was that the Omen laptop is more than capable of handling high fidelity gaming. And, the results compare well against more expensive machines.
You will get smooth gameplay at 1080p with this GPU and especially now with the addition of Nvidia’s DLSS. With which I’ve noticed a decent improvement on performance, averaging around 130 fps at 1080p playing Warzone. (previously 100fps)
If you want to see it in action, check out the YouTube video below. The graphic settings are set on high and the resolution is set to 1440p.
What’s In The Box: HP Omen 15 gaming laptop?
On arrival, I was a little nervous, not sure if I had made the right decision. £1200 is a lot of money to spend when you are not 100% sure. Especially now, with what is going on in the world. However, once I opened the box, the my fears, were quickly washed away.
Inside, the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop was sat next to a 200 W Slim Smart AC power adapter. That weighs about half a kilo and has an oblong shape, and will sit neatly and flat behind the laptop when charging.
Also supplied was a decent quality country power cord to enable you to plug the laptop directly into a standard outlet. For the record, the HP Omen laptop does charge in no time at all and even after four months of use I still don’t have issues with charging.
Furthermore, HP supplied a booklet containing setup instructions with details about HP user guides. Which are hugely important for those who are unsure how to set up WIFI or use the free McAfee LiveSafe subscription.
Although, McAfee has been deleted, because I always stick to what I know, therefore, I installed Bitdefender security, which is by far the best laptop security software available.

Design and Appearance: HP Omen 15 Gaming laptop Review
The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop is a combination of plastic and aluminium. At first glance, I was impressed with how there were no sharp edges, and even the corners of the Omen laptop are nicely rounded.
Furthermore, the Omen 15 laptop looks the part with a grey, hard plastic throughout the build. The keyboard and panel are sat in an aluminium frame.
And the laptop was not as heavy as a thought or as thick. Noticeably, the chassis was smooth to the touch, a kind of dark grey colour. HP calls this Mica Silver, but to me, it is dark grey.
As you can see, from the image below, on the lid of the laptop, there is a nice-looking gradient blue to purple diamond Omen logo. Personally, I’m not too keen on big messy logo’s you get with some gaming laptops, so this one is perfect.
Overall a nice-looking and sleek professional gaming laptop and the build quality is decent. There is little movement on the hinges and machine seems sturdy.
It weighs just 2.37kg and is 36cm in width, 24 cm in length, and 2.25cm high. So not the heaviest or the biggest by any means.
HP Omen Review: Nice-looking Gradient Blue to Purple Diamond Omen Logo
When you lift the lid of the laptop there is little movement, a little bendy and shaky. But, the 2-inch hinges are wide enough and strong enough to help stabilize the laptop.
Amazingly, you can lift the lid with one hand, and tilt the laptop a full 90 degrees without any problems.
As you can see from the image below, the base houses a large grille stretching the length of the laptop. And, there is a small vent on the right side to allow plenty of air flow. Which is ideal for gaming scenarios.
The HP Omen benefits from the tempest cooling technology, with 3-sided venting and 5-way airflow. Amazingly, the temperature of the laptop has been impressively low since day one.
Furthermore, there are two rubber strips on the base that run almost the width of the chassis at the front and back, allowing the laptop to rest comfortably and easily on my desk.
Although, I have since purchased a laptop cooling pad for comfort more than anything else and now the laptop is raised up from the flat surface which helps further with the cooling.
Finally, if you are one of those gamers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty. You can easily unscrew the eight screws attaching the base to the laptop and upgrade the hardware.
You can increase the RAM to 32 GB and add an additional SSD and doing so will massively improve the laptops performance.
And there is no extra bay to install a hard drive. Which is not the end of the world, besides, who wants a bulky HD slowing down your laptop? Definitely, not me.
HP Omen 15 has 3-sided Venting And 5-way Airflow With Tempest Cooling Technology
The HP Omen 15 Laptop Has A 4-zone RGB Backlit Keyboard
When lifting the lid on the HP Omen gaming laptop you are presented with a 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard that benefits from outlined WASD keys.
You can easily customize the keyboard using the Omen gaming hub software, which can be activated with one click of the Omen Hub Key, seated top right of the keyboard.
The Omen hub allows you access to many useful features. Including your game time, system vitals and your laptops performance controls.
Other than that, the power-on key location is on the top row of the keyboard next to the backspace button, which is handy.
However there are some HP Omen reviewers out there who think this may cause you issues with accidentally powering off the laptop by clicking the backspace button.
But you don’t need to be concerned, because you would need to hold the power key for at least 2 seconds for the laptop to power off. Therefore, making it near impossible for this to happen during your gameplay.
HP Omen 15 Has Smooth And Snappy Keys
Other features worth mentioning, the arrow keys are on the right of the keyboard with a 1.5-inch space above to allow your fingers to rest when typing for long periods. Which is something I have found useful.
The trackpad is a decent size, about one-third of the width and seems accurate. Although, this is not something I would use too often, just when testing for this article. The position is slightly off dead centre and doesn’t seem to get in the way when typing.
Finally, the keys are smooth and seem fast, with a short actuate distance. And you can take advantage of the 26-key rollover anti-ghosting technology HP has generously donated.
Overall, the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop comes with a decent keyboard, which is snappy, responsive, and the keyboard is nicely laid out. And, gets a big fat thumbs up from me.
HP Omen 15 Display: 144 Hz IPS FHD Anti Glare Panel and Wide-view 720p HD Camera
The HP Omen 15 Ryzen 7 panel is impressive. It is a micro-edge FHD anti-glare display with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Which should ensure smooth and crisp gameplay. And, yet, it does not disappoint.
Moreover, the screen is bright, and the viewing angles are superb. The colour temperature is high, and colours seem accurate. Additionally, you will also benefit from 72% NTSC, which is now standard on the best high-quality monitors.
Furthermore, the panel has a screen ratio of 16:9, and a pixel density of 142 PPI and a maximum brightness of 300 nits, making it an excellent display for this price point.
All in all, I am very impressed with the 144Hz display that comes with the HP Omen 15.6 gaming laptop.
The panel is surrounded by a three-sided narrow bezel, which leaves room at the top for the wide-vision 720p HD camera. Which is great for video chats with family members or your teammates due to the 88-degree, wide-angle field of view.
So, to test this out, I decided to play a fast-action shooter game and my favourite Call of Duty Warzone.
As you can see from the video above, the HP Omen has allowed me to enjoy an admirable gaming performance. There has been no flickering or blurring, and I did not see any signs of screen tearing. Even when the settings were high.
Finally, to find a gaming laptop with a 144Hz panel of this quality for this price, allowing me to play the latest games and especially a game such as Call of Duty Warzone, is superb. I could not be happier and so far, so good.

The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop review: The laptop is superb for video editing and creating graphics.
On reviewing the HP Omen for video and graphics editing, I have been highly impressed with just how much I can do simultaneously.
Daily I would be using Photoshop and Adobe Rush, and the Omen 15 can comfortably run both apps together. I was able to download and install Adobe creative cloud, set up Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Rush, all in the space of 5 mins.
As I have said before, my HP Omen is not just for gaming I must be able to run graphics software comfortably.
Was it worth it? Yes, it most definitely was.
My image editing does look superb and so much better than with my old Intel laptop, Therefore, answering the concerns I had over buying a gaming laptop with an AMD CPU, over an Intel CPU.
HP Omen comes with impressive Bang & Olufsen speakers
The display is joined by, so far, the most impressive feature, the audio. HP has included Bang & Olufsen speakers and they are a nice treat to look forward to when you get your HP Omen gaming machine.
The sound is loud but not too bassy, and in game, the background sound effects are really-good, and the in-game music does not sound too tinny.
And to be honest, you would have the choice of either using your headset or without, and you would still have an enjoyable gaming experience.
Hopefully, I can improve the sound further by testing the Audio Boost and Smart Amp Technology you get with the Omen laptop range.
How good is the hardware: The HP Omen 15 gaming laptop Review?
On the inside, the HP has found room inside for a Ryzen 7 4800H processor, with mouth-watering eight CPU cores and a humungous sixteen threads.
The AMD 4000 series CPU runs at 2.9 GHz with a potential turbo peak of 4.05 GHz with a max boost of 4.2 GHz. And 8 MB L3 cache.
Furthermore, it comes with AMD Radeon™ Integrated Graphics which is a bonus and would give you an alternative graphics solution. Although not enough to take on the latest game titles.
This laptop is the first with an AMD 4000 series processor I have had the pleasure to deal with, and so far, so good. I mean, everything I do, whether that is, Photoshop work, online gaming, browsing the web or writing long blog posts using Microsoft office, it has been a breeze.
Sometimes with three, four, or even five applications running at once, without experiencing problems. I can only put this down to the quality of the AMD Ryzen processor and all that comes with it.
On testing the Ryzen 7 4800H Processor
On testing, I was amazed to receive an outstanding single core score. Something I thought an AMD processor wouldn’t give me. Putting to bed the concerns I had over AMD or Intel and sending the Intel machine packing for good.
The Ryzen 4800H mobile processor not only demolishes everyday tasks but also office apps, audio, and video playback. And it can handle typical workstation tasks requiring strong multi-core CPU performance just as well.
My bench score of 90.4% was even more pleasing. It was 6.5% above the average bench of 84%. for this CPU. The scores were taken from over 23,000 users with the same CPU on their gaming laptops.
So, a big thumbs up to the HP Omen 15.6 for getting more performance out of the Ryzen 7 4800H and much more than many other laptops with the same CPU.
Finally, the Ryzen 7 CPU suitability for 3D gaming score was just as impressible high and I can’t wait for HP to release the same laptop with the AMD 5000 series processor. I will be first in line, that’s for sure.
The NVIDIA RTX 2060 Graphics Card
HP paired the Ryzen CPU with an impressive NVIDIA RTX 2060 mobile ray-tracing graphics card with 6GB GDDR6 dedicated memory. Not the latest or the fastest mobile GPU from NVIDIA, but a decent graphics card all the same.
Again I was happy with the benchmark score of 68.6%, which is a decent 3D score. The GPU will handle the majority of the latest AAA games at high resolutions and high level settings.
I decided to put the GPU to the test playing Call of Duty Warzone, and over the first 15 hours of gameplay on relatively high settings at 1080p, I averaged over 100 fps.
Which is not bad, but, since then Nvidia has introduced DLSS into the RTX chips.
And I have also worked on tweaking the settings to find the best settings for Warzone for my laptop. Now, I am averaging 130-140 fps.
Also, I am looking forward to testing the RTX 2060 graphics card with some of the other demanding game titles. And, I have yet to play another game that supports ray-tracing.
Like, the Ray-tracing Minecraft, or maybe I could get my first HP Omen dub in 3D Fortnite, now that would be fun. But, as soon as I do, I will update this page.
Overall, the RTX 2060 is a decent graphics card capable of delivering 100+ frames per second in most of today’s games at 1080p with high/ultra settings. With some gaming @1440p also possible.
All in all, the laptop is excellent value for money, and I would most definitely recommend the Omen 15 gaming laptop to anyone with a thirst for portable gaming.
Does the HP Omen 15.6 have enough RAM for Gaming?
The HP Omen 15 components are concluded, by 16 GB DDR4 RAM, clocked at 3200MHz. Consisting of 2x8GB sticks filling the two slots available. For now, this is ok.
But, it will not be long before my hands would need to get dirty upgrading to 32 GB.
That said, 16 GB RAM is a great starting point for gaming, and in the gaming world, it’s known as the sweet spot. However, a gaming laptop with 8 GB is still, ok, just not enough for the more demanding game titles, games like COD Warzone.
That said, I have yet to utilize the full-memory. Even thou, there have been times I had Photoshop, Microsoft word, several webpages, and my email client running all at once.
Without affecting my laptop’s performance.
However, when running Call of Duty Warzone alongside my Radeon software, the memory was tipping 90%, but Warzone is a massive game and requires at least 12 GB RAM alone so that’s to be expected.
On Testing The Memory Sticks
On testing the RAM that I received with my HP omen 15 gaming laptop, it was pleasing to find that HP has supplied high quality memory sticks.
Supplying two sticks of 8 GB Samsung M471A1K43DB1-CWE 260-pin NON-ECC SODIMM RAM Memory, which is some of the best laptop RAM on the market. And highly sort after.
On further research, I found several fantastic 5-star reviews and this is possibly the reason why they received an admiring 104% benchmark over Multi-core and Single-core tests.
These scores are way above the average 88% on the same model and will make a big difference in how well the gaming laptop will perform on the big stage.
How Much Storage You Get With The HP Omen 15 Laptop?
We would all love endless amounts of storage, so you don’t have to worry about what photos to save or what files to delete. Gone are the days of bulky hard drives slowing down your experience. Although still cheaper than the equivalent SSD.
When researching to buy a laptop, whether it’s for gaming or work, checking the storage solution is always a priority. There are two questions I look to answer every time. Is it an SSD or an HDD, and can you add more storage if needed?
Most budget gaming laptops will have at least a 256 GB SSD. Ok, it is not the end of the world, but you must be able to add more, or it’s not worth considering.
The HP Omen 15 comes with a 512 GB SSD, and there is no room to install an HDD. However, there are two M.2 NVMe slots that support PCIe x4 drives, so you can add a 2nd SSD to use as you secondary storage solution.
An SSD is a much better secondary storage solution than using a hard disk drive. But you will have to pay a bit more for the extra storage, but that’s not a bad headache to have.
But, if more storage is what you need, the HP omen 15 is available with a 1TB SSD. Although, this gaming laptop comes with an Intel 10th Gen Mobile processor.
Testing the Stock HP Omen 15 SSD
HP has treated me to a Western Digital NVMe 512GB SSD, not the biggest but one of the fastest and performing way above expectations.
On testing, I scored a resounding 267% for sequential read/write speeds and high results for random 4k and deep queue 4k. And just like with the other hardware components, I could not be happier.
The hardware HP has squeezed into the Omen 15 is 2nd to none.
The Western Digital SSD is suitable for heavy workloads, fast boots, and responsive applications. Also, much quicker transfer of multi-gigabyte files than many SSD’s tested.
Finally, the SSD is another component I will be upgrading soon, even thou 512 GB of storage is a good starting point. Shortly I plan to download more games, and they will eat up more storage.
Especially with the size of the latest game titles. Let’s take COD Warzone, for instance, a game that requires over 100 GB of space and that is already 20% of what I currently have.
If only HP supplied a 1 TB version of this Western Digital SSD due to its high quality, but that is probably expecting a bit too much for this price point.
The HP Omen 15 is available with a 1 TB SSD, but comes with an Intel 10th Gen Processor
HP Omen 17 Intel i7-10750H
This laptop is an alternative HP Omen 15 to my AMD Ryzen 7 4800H machine. The laptop comes with a faster single-core Intel Core i7-10750H processor. Also, a slightly more powerful NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics card. Including 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD.
The HP Omen 15 is a Good Laptop for Gaming?
The HP Omen 15.6 gaming laptop review so far has shown this laptop is superb for gaming.
Over the last few months it has been tough to gather the will-power to knock back the temptation to flick on my Blizzard app and blast out some COD Warzone.
Besides, I had to improve my rankings on the new account I had to create with my new HP Omen 15 laptop. It has been just too much to resist.
Also, because of the new account, I had to start the process to unlock the weapons all over again. Nightmare! because I had the Kilo AR with the Kar 98 fully-unlocked. My two best Warzone friends. And, if you have played the game before. I’m sure you will know what I mean.
Without them, I would not be ready to jump out of the plane and enter Verdansk with my new HP Omen gaming laptop for the first time and take on 150 game hungry Warzone players.
So to answer your question. Is the HP omen 15 with the Ryzen 7 4800H processor and the NVIDIA RTX 2060 graphics card good for gaming? It is a resounding YES!
Testing my HP Omen playing Warzone Battle Royale
Call of Duty Warzone is a perfect example to test out the HP Omen 15 to see how good the laptop is for gaming due to the game being graphics intensive and just a big game in general.
To run Warzone smoothly, you need to have at least 100 GB of available storage space, 12 GB RAM, and a discrete GTX 900M series mobile graphics chip. Also, an Intel i5 7th Gen mobile CPU or the equivalent AMD CPU. Possibly an AMD 4000 series processor.
Luckily the HP Omen 15 has the hardware above these requirements. And Warzone runs like a dream allowing me to enjoy a stutter and blur-free gameplay and experience the frames per second required to have some fun.
As you can see from my exploits in the video above, I am most definitely having fun, and the win was just the icing on the cake.
High Graphics Intensive Game Performance
|Call Of Duty Warzone||Medium (Full HD) 1440p||High (Full HD) 1440p||High (Full HD) 1080p|
|Average FPS||90 fps||80 fps||130 fps|
Uniguine Valley Benchmark Tests
Uniguine Valley Benchmark is an extreme performance and stability test to the hardware in your gaming laptop, including the video card, power supply and cooling system. All of this is done with an interactive detailed environment.
Below, the three gaming laptops with the RTX 2060 graphics card went through testing using the valley benchmark test. Drill into each gaming laptop to see the results. You may be surprised.
Reviewing the HP Omen 15 gaming laptop has been enjoyable, and this laptop is one of the best RTX 2060 based laptops on the market in 2020.
The Omen 15 is decent in many areas beyond its price. And the laptop has enough graphics ability to play the latest AAA games titles with ease. In addition, it has a sleek and stylish exterior, also, the HP Omen features a bigger fan size than most at this price point.
Making the cooling system one of the biggest things we can take from the HP Omen 15 review. Surprisingly the Ryzen 7 47800H CPU beats the Intel i7 10750H you can get with the other HP Omen laptops available, amazingly, by all but only a few user bench results.
HP Omen 15 RTX 2060
The HP Omen 15 with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor. And an NVIDIA RTX 2060 graphics card. 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD
The Omen 15 outperforms similar spec laptops
The HP Omen outperforms the Acer Predator and the Acer Nitro with the Unigine Benchmark 3D testing, albeit, with a different processor. And there are a plethora of ports to keep you, and most importantly, all your devices happy.
Finally, I am looking forward to testing the laptop with other game titles. And maybe try my hand at Minecraft and create my very-own ray tracing-enhanced worlds. Or I could dust down the cobwebs and build my way to victory in the latest season of Fortnite.
Overall I am happy with what this laptop offers and I am looking forward to HP releasing the Ryzen 5000 series version paired with one of the 28 RTX 30 series laptop graphics cards.
Would I recommend the Omen 15.6 gaming laptop? That would be 100% yes, every time.
