Comparing HP Omen Vs Alienware Brands

Dell Alienware Vs HP Omen Brands

It’s easy to compare the Omen Vs Alienware gaming laptop brands simply because their information is readily available which just goes to show how well-known and popular these two laptops brands have become.

The HP Omen vs Dell Alienware gaming laptops are manufactured by two of the worlds most successful computer companies. Both brands have built similar size companies with thousands of employees located all around the world and materialised around the same time in remarkably similar environments.

As for Dell computers they started their journey inside a dorm room on the Texas University campus. Whereas the idea behind HP came about in a residential car garage, which is remarkably similar to Amazon.

HP Omen Gaming Laptop History

As you may already know, the Omen laptops are manufactured by HP, a shortened down version of Hewlett-Packard. An American company that started in 1939 by two friends, Bill Hewlett and David Packard.

Unfortunately, those guys are no longer with us but deserve a big thanks for what they have achieved.

Fast forward to the turn of the 21st century, HP became the world’s number-one selling PC brand. With so many amazing brands the like of Lenovo, Apple, and ASUS or Acer, and MSI it’s by no means an easy feat.

They kept the number one position for a number of years, from 2001 until 2005 and then again, from 2011 until 2015. At which point, Lenovo took over and that’s been the case ever since.

Well, at least until the end of 2020. It will be interesting to see if Lenovo takes top spot this year? My money is on Dell due to their outstanding DELL Alienware gaming machines, but you just never know.

The Omen Brand Started in 2009

In 2006 Hewlett Packard acquired the Voodoo computer company that originally specialized in high-performance desktop computers. And a few years later, they introduced the Omen range into its portfolio, which included high-performance desktop computers and also gaming laptops.

HP did keep Voodoo’s original “Tribal Mask” logo (shown below) for Omen gaming products until 2020. At which point, they changed the logo to the diamond Omen logo used today. (Also shown below)

The Original Omen Logo, and the Latest Omen Logo

HP Omen Computer Brand Logos

HP Omen gaming products consist of a wide range of high quality, Desktop computers, Monitors, Gaming Headsets, Mice, Keyboards and off course the HP Omen 15 laptops

These have gone from strength to strength and the next couple of years could be even better for HP with the release of the new Omen Ryzen 5000 series and Nvidia RTX 3060, and RTX 3070 gaming machines.

Dell Alienware Gaming laptop History

Dell and its hugely popular gaming laptop brand, Alienware, have a similar story behind its history to that of HP. Although there’s one notable difference, Dell came into existence later in the 20th century.

Dell Computers was first created in 1984 by solo entrepreneur and now multi-billionaire Michael Saul Dell. Amazingly, from his dormitory room at the University in Texas. Exactly one year later Michael completed his first computer build, which he named the Turbo PC, listed below.

Dell Computers first ever PC, the Turbo PC

First Dell Computer

Michael Dell’s first ever computer was built at the tender age of 21, and sold for nearly £3000.

The Turbo PC, had a 10MB hard drive, and inside an Intel 8088 processor that ran at 8MHz.

This equates to 8 million cycles per second and when you think the latest Intel 11th Gen processors run at 5.20GHz or 5.2 billion cycles per second. It’s amazing how far the latest computers have come.

In terms of comparisons to the number of units sold per year since 2000. Unlike HP, Dell has only managed to get the number one selling computer brand once, and that was from 2006 to 2011. However, every other year since then, Dell has been in the top 3 rivalling HP and Lenovo for top spot.

In 2006 Dell Acquired the Alienware Brand.

In 2006 Dell acquired the brand Alienware, which was already a gaming computer company with nearly 20 years of experience manufacturing high-end gaming desktops. Their portfolio included, desktop computers, notebooks, and gaming consoles which didn’t last long as they could not compete with PlayStation or Xbox.

The name Alienware originated from a taste for the hit TV series the X-files, hence the laptop model names Alienware and Area 51. And, it wasn’t until 2009 they released their first gaming laptop offerings.

Their first gaming machines was the Dell Alienware M17x gaming laptop. It featured a powerful 3rd Generation Intel Core™ i7 processor and weighed a little over 4.5kg. Also, ran on the Windows 7.

Alienware M17x Gaming laptops

The graphics card offerings were limited. One such card it had was an Nvidia GTX 675M which first brought NVIDIA PhysX technology and 3D Vision to notebook gaming. The Alienware M17x gaming laptop had mixed reviews, some good and some extremely bad.

But still, 91% of customers recommended the Alienware gaming laptop and was on many gaming enthusiasts shopping list. At the time, it was an impressive beast.

HP Omen Vs Alienware Gaming Laptop Specs: Which laptop is best?

Even after HP released their Ryzen 5000 series laptops there are still big differences between Alienware Vs Omen gaming laptop available specs. There are far more RTX 30 series laptops available from Dell Alienware compared to only a few within the Omen laptop range.

However, things are only slightly different in the US, where you will find a wider selection of Omen laptops with 30 series cards. But still not as many as in the Alienware range.

If you were to look at the top of the line HP Omen laptop, it accommodates an Nvidia RTX 3070, whereas the top Alienware laptop boasts an Nvidia RTX 3080 mobile GPU which is the best GPU available for laptops…..

As for the processors, the Omen laptops only go up to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H 4.4GHz mobile processor or an Intel 10th Gen CPU. Whereas the top of the line Alienware laptops boasts the AMD Ryzen R9 5900HX processor which has a boost clock speed of 4.8GHz. They also accommodate the newer Intel 11th gen mobile processors.

That said, if you compare the Alienware AMD R9 5900HX vs HP Omen AMD R7 5800H laptops, there isn’t a huge difference. They have the same core and thread counts and the rest of the layout is almost identical.

And, the benchmarks I’ve seen show that the Ryzen 5900HX is only slightly faster, although this will depend on the laptop configuration you have with it. So, you’re not really getting that much more performance by choosing the more expensive Alienware AMD laptop over the Omen AMD laptop.

Comparing the same spec models, I mean HP Omen vs Alienware laptops with an Nvidia RTX 3070, 16GB RAM, 165Hz display, and an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H mobile processor there is roughly $500 dollars difference in favour of the Alienware laptop.

Comparing Similar Omen Vs Alienware Laptop Specs

In this HP Omen Vs Alienware gaming laptop comparison we chose the HP OMEN LAPTOP 15Z-EN100 and the ALIENWARE M15 Ryzen Edition R5 gaming laptops. Both pairing an Nvidia RTX 3070 and the new AMD “Zen 3” 8 Core Ryzen 7 5800H mobile 4.4GHz mobile processor.

Superb laptops for high fidelity gaming, video editing and graphics design. And, they will run the latest games on high and ultra settings. Both, offer Nvidia Ray Tracing and DLSS to improve performance further.

Verdict: Omen vs Alienware AMD Laptops

The HP Omen vs Alienware gaming laptops above are excellent mid to high-end gaming machines. Both showcase the new AMD Ryzen 7 5800H laptop processor paired with an Nvidia RTX 3070. Unfortunately there are no details on either webpage listing the TDP (Thermal Design Power) of either RTX 3070. So, this would need to be a question you ask HP or Dell before purchase.

In addition, both gaming laptops come equipped with a stock 1 TB M.2 SSD, but the Omen laptop is available with a 512GB SSD so you would save money choosing that option. And they also have plenty of options for additional storage and memory.

In terms of available ports, both laptops have plenty of super-fast charging ports plus all the other usual suspects. But there will be no support for thunderbolt 3, for that you would need to consider either the Intel 11th Gen ALIENWARE X15 or the Intel 10th Gen OMEN Laptop 17-cb1097nr.

Compare Display Options

Clearly there is many more display options with the Alienware laptop, it offers 165Hz FHD, 240Hz QHD, and 360Hz QHD options. Whereas the Omen laptop only brings 144hz FHD and 165 Hz QHD display’s to the table.

Furthermore, NVIDIA G-SYNC technology is available with the Alienware 240Hz and 360Hz laptops which will help to synchronize the refresh rate of your display with the performance of your graphics card and will offer smoother gameplay during high-speed action which is something you won’t get with the Omen laptop.

But choosing the NVIDIA G-SYNC display options would surely bump up the price of the laptop.

Which display option is best would depend on what you plan to do with the laptop, if it’s just gaming then an FHD display would be more than enough. Whereas, if you tend to run programmes such as PS or video editing software then it would be worth investing in one of the QHD laptops.

Compare Upgrade Options

Both laptops above come with 16 GB dual-channel memory as standard and 16 GB is a good starting point for gaming. Also, they can accommodate up to 32 GB RAM which is more than enough.

As for storage, the Omen laptop will come with either a stock 512GB SSD or the pricier 1 TB SSD whereas the Alienware laptop comes standard with a 1 TB SSD and they both have additional M.2 drives for additional storage. Again, there are plenty of storage options with both gaming machines.

Compare Alienware Vs HP Omen Laptop Design

When comparing the design and appearance of the Alienware Vs Omen gaming laptops, what stands out is the futuristic look of the Alienware model. It looks how a gaming laptop should look. That said, the Omen laptop isn’t exactly an ugly duckling by any means.

As for the Dell ALIENWARE M15 Ryzen Edition R5 laptop, it serves up a good build quality and is sleek and sturdy, it features premium magnesium alloy materials, and even though the chassis looks metal, it isn’t because the outer chassis is plastic.

Amazingly, the Dell Alienware laptop is slightly lighter than the HP Omen 15 laptop. But only by a whisker, even though the Omen laptop is thicker and by nearly half a cm.

As for the Omen build, it has an aluminium frame surrounding the panel and keyboard, along with hard plastic throughout the build. There are no sharp edges, and even the corners are nicely rounded.

Moreover, nothing much has changed with the design from the 2020 HP Omen 15, and I can only put this down to user reviews being good. It still has 2 x 2-inch hinges as opposed to the one big hinge you get with the Dell Alienware.

Overall the Alienware laptop design stands out over the Omen laptop, but only because of the RGB strip design surrounding the back of the laptop. Which is a nice touch.

Both machines are made of sturdy materials, which are strong and durable. And both laptops have exhausts across the back and sides. However, the Dell Alienware offerings are much bigger, coupled with a classy hexagon pattern across the width of the laptop.

Compare HP Omen Vs Alienware Keyboard

The layout of both keyboards are similar, and they have soft keys with little travel. They have similar size trackpads but the Omen trackpad is just off dead centre whereas the Alienware trackpad is centred.

Neither laptop has a number pad, but that’s becoming standard now on thin and light laptops. Equally, both laptops have fully customizable lighting systems with decent 4-zone RGB and anti-ghosting technology.

Overall, I prefer the look of the Alienware Keyboard Vs the Omen laptop keyboard because it does have a sexier and smoother look, but you may have a different opinion.

However, there is one notable difference between the Omen vs Alienware laptop keyboards. On the Omen machine the power key is located on the keyboard next to the delete key and above the backspace button. Unlike with the Dell Alienware laptop where it is located away from the keyboard.

Some reviewers have said that you could potentially turn off the laptop by accidentally clicking the power key. But that’s not been the case with me, as it hasn’t happened to me as yet.

Just for the record, you would need to hold the key for a whole two seconds before it powers off. Like I said, it’s something that doesn’t bother me with my HP Omen laptop. So please don’t let that put you off.

Overall, the Alienware gaming laptop gets the nod on design and appearance, it has a better keyboard and the RGB lighting across the back gives it a gaming feel. But the Omen machine looks smart and I wouldn’t kick it out of bed.

HP Omen Vs Alienware Gaming Performance

When comparing HP Omen Vs Dell Alienware laptop performance you need to first understand they both produce amazing medium to high-end laptops that will run the latest AAA games on high to ultra settings.

You will find quite a few configurations of the HP Omen with the older GTX Nvidia cards but only a few Omen laptops with the Nvidia 20 and 30 series GPUs. Whereas the Dell Alienware gaming laptops are far more readily available with newer Nvidia RTX 30 series mobile graphics cards.

The gaming laptops in this post have the RTX 3070 8 GB card, which offers ray tracing and DLSS in games. And should easily turn out high fps @2440p and playable fps when ray tracing is enabled.

DLSS stands for deep learning super sampling, a rendering technique to help boost frames rates without affecting your images. Only available with Nvidia RTX graphics cards.

Gaming Performance – Average High FPS

Cyberpunk 2077 1080p RT+DLSS QualityHP Omen 15 Dell Alienware

Clearly, from the results above there are slight differences in frame rates, with the Dell Alienware laptop marginally coming out on top. Well, I suppose, for the price of these laptops, it’s expected to experience decent frames in most high fidelity games and more than enough for an enjoyable gaming experience.

Dell Alienware Vs HP Omen Customer Service

When choosing a gaming laptop, the customer service part is sometimes left behind, understandably, you just want to grab your shiny new toy and get home and play your favourite games.

Remember these machines cost a pretty penny, so, if anything was too wrong, the company needs to be there to help you resolve or fix your problems. And, especially if the problem turns out to be a manufacturing default.

The quality of the after-sales customer service must be good, and the same applies to any business-to-consumer (B2C) business. For the most part, the companies behind manufacturing and selling gaming laptops have decent customer service.

For companies like HP and Dell who have been in the trade a long time, should have this down to a fine art but you just never know.

So I decided to research and see which company has the best customer service. Also, checked out the kind of services they offer to find out how easy it is to make contact to fix a laptop issue.

Dell and HP Contact Options

HP Omen Customer Service

  1. ASK Rose Online Bot
  2. Live Chat 12 Hours Per Day
  3. Email Support (24 hours)
  4. Contact Number (15 Hours)

Dell Alienware Customer Service

  1. Live Chat 12 Hours Per Day
  2. Email Support (24 hours)
  3. Watts App Messaging
  4. Freephone Number

HP Omen Customer Service

After visiting the HP website, within seconds, I was able to click on the customer service tab. You are then presented with a well laid out webpage offering loads of resources and guides, with steps on how to fix common problems.

There is also a community forum full of HP users who seem to actively discuss the latest HP software and hardware problems.

On reading through some of the threads, I can clearly see that other HP product users are more than happy to assist in fixing issues or offer a solution. And, I can imagine most laptop issues could be resolved this way without speaking to an actual HP representative.

That’s where the fun could stop because Laptop Mag carried out a test phone call with an HP rep and ran into a couple of issues and there were pushy staff trying to sell additional warranties etc.

But I don’t think that’s all bad because the same would happen if you were to call Sky Tv or Virgin Media. Overall, HP offer loads of helpful resources, guides, and even tips.

Therefore, if you decide on the Omen laptop you should be ok with the aftersales help. Just be prepared to say no if they offer you something you don’t need.

Dell Alienware Customer Service

When visiting the Dell website you are presented with a small pop up box on the right of the screen. Offering email support, technical support, freephone contact number and WhatsApp messenger.

And you will find loads of resources and guides to help fix common laptop computer problems. It is easy to navigate and find what you need. And very similar to what is on offer with the HP website.

Again, Laptop Mag completed a test call, this time, the call was a little easier. Overall, it was a decent experience, and you should be fine ordering your Dell Alienware gaming laptop. And be confident you will be looked after for some time to come.

  1. What's so Special about Alienware?

Dell Alienware laptops are amongst the best on the planet, although not very budget friendly as even the weakest model is upwards of £1500. They are special because of the quality materials used and their designs are awesome.
They feature highly responsive display’s with up to 360 Hz refresh rate and the latest NVIDIA graphics technology. You will find many more laptops with the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 8GB GDDR6 graphics cards than many other brands.
Furthermore, you will easily enjoy high fps in the latest AAA games even on the so-called weakest Alienware laptop spec. The M15 R3 15″ laptop pairs an impressive Intel i7 10750H processor and an Nvidia RTX2060 GPU, and that’s just the base Alienware model.
Not only that, Dell Alienware laptops receive rave reviews from big tech review companies such as Laptop Mag, Tech Radar, and Notebook-check.

    They have said things like;

Techrader: Alienware’s 15″ gaming laptop is a beast and it has got even better thanks to design tweaks and new components.
PC-Mag: The Alienware M15 R3 is a powerful high-end gaming machine, with a uniquely styled design that sets it apart from the rest of the field.
Notebook Check: It may look the same on the outside, but it’s a different beast on the inside.
So, when you have these guys saying such good things about the Alienware laptops, they are obviously something special. Dell has really pushed the envelope with these laptops. And, if you can afford one you should get one.

  2. Does HP Omen last long?

My current gaming laptop is the HP Omen 15 RTX 2060 which is now 6 months old. But still, everyday I ensure the display, the grilles, and the exhausts are wiped to remove dust and dirt.
In addition, I also clean my files and scan the laptop with anti virus software and always keep my drivers updated. During game time the laptop is plugged into a power source and I only use battery power if needs must. (For best gaming performance)
And, I believe all these tasks are required to ensure my HP Omen lasts longer. Even though, they say a gaming laptop has a three to four year life span. I believe if you look after your laptop it will last a lot longer.
There are other things that will reduce its lifespan, like pushing the processor and graphics card to their limits for hours on end. For the record, your GPU should not exceed 70/80 degrees Celsius and your processor should stay around the 80/90 mark and not above.
It's a simple fact, that high CPU and GPU temps will dramatically shorten your laptops lifespan and high temps will have an effect on other components, like your battery.
So to answer the question, How long does an HP Omen last?
An HP Omen laptop will last longer if you take good care of it and treat the laptop how it deserves to be treated. If you do, you will enjoy many more years than the estimated 3 to 4 years.

  3. Which is Better HP Omen or Alienware 17?

Choosing between the HP Omen or Alienware 17 gaming laptops will come down to your budget. Overall, Alienware laptops are far more expensive and they are known to be really high quality.
But that’s not to say HP Omen machines are not, the Omen design is solid but if you are looking for a gaming laptop to show off at the party, the Alienware 17″ laptop would certainly raise a few eyebrows.
When it comes to design, the Alienware 17 laptops are top of the tree, they look amazing and the customization options are almost endless. And you can pick and choose your components to match your budget and your gaming requirements.
For instance, the new ALIENWARE M15 R6 Gaming laptop which is the base model starting at £1495. With that you are treated to an Intel 11th Gen i5 processor, an RTX 3080 GPU and you can even upgrade to a 360 Hz display.
However, when it comes to the HP Omen range, their top line model is on par with Alienware’s base model. Ok, you get the RTX 3070 but the best processor they can offer is either an Intel 10th Gen or AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with pricing starting around the £1200 mark.
So looking at that, you’re not gonna pick up a budget laptop carrying an Alienware logo. You can however find a decent budget HP Omen laptop.

To wrap it up. The Dell Alienware laptops are far more superior to the HP Omen laptop range but more expensive. Plus, consumers can better choose an Alienware laptop spec to suit their budgets and gaming requirements.

You will find Alienware laptops pairing an Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card with the new Intel 11th Gen processors. Which is something the Omen range cannot match.
