Is Razer A Good Brand

Is Razer a good brand? Well, from my experience, I certainly think so.

Over the last 10 years, I have used many different gaming products, and a few of those features Razer’s green illuminated snake logo. Honestly, they have yet to disappoint.

Razer is one of the best gaming accessories brands there is. Known for producing high-quality gaming mice, external keyboards, 7.1 surround sound budget headphones and fantastic thin and light gaming laptops.

You only have to look at their sales figures achieved in the first six months of 2021. They achieved record-high revenues ($752 Million) with 68% year on year growth. Which is some feat considering there are so many other quality gaming brands they must compete with.

In this post, I will highlight everything good about Razer and the not so good, that’s if there is some. So, if you are looking for a new gaming laptop, or you’re searching for your next gaming accessory. Reading this post will help you decide if it has the Razers snake logo on it or not.

History: Is Razer A Good Brand?

Razer Gaming Products

Razer gaming products have been around since the late ’90s, with their first being a big and beefy gaming mouse called the Boomslang. There were two models, the Boomslang 1000 and the slightly pricier Boomslang 2000 and it was the first of its kind to use high-resolution encoder technology.

But, was it a good Razer product? Well, if you look back at the reviews and one in particular from tech giant Eurogamer, the Boomslang received the thumbs up with a respectable score of 9 out of 10, so it seems a good start for Razer.

However, not long after releasing the Boomslang their parent company Karma ceased to exist, due to financial issues during the dot-com era. But, we didn’t have to wait too long before Razer reappeared.

Because, in 2005, the Razer brand was back but it required major investment from various government sources and the dreams of two dedicated gamers (CEO Min-Liang Tan and the former President Robert Krakoff) to start the ball rolling once again.

Their main goal was to build a brand and create high-quality gaming products that meet the needs of gamers. And so it began, a brand made by gamers, for gamers.

So, have they succeeded in being a good brand?

In my opinion, yes.

Are Razer Gaming Products Good?

To detail every product Razer has released you would need to write a book as thick as the Bible. So, to simplify things we decided to pick out a select few to showcase their product history. We’ll then compare them in terms of reviews and ratings to similar products released today.

So, in 2005 they began their Razer Inc journey, first launching the Razer Diamondback which quickly became one of the best-selling gaming mice of all time and the first to integrate a light encoder. As well as having the fastest transmitter sensor available at that time.

The Diamondback brought Razer the first of many global awards for featuring On-the-fly sensitivity. But to my surprise, it received poor reviews on Amazon finishing with a not so good 3.2 out of 5 stars.

In the same year, Razer released their second major product and the first of many Vipers, which quickly became extremely popular amongst casual gamers. Although today’s Viper is vastly improved, I own one myself and it’s been a joy to use and still going strong after two years of use.

After the Viper came the Razer Copperhead mouse, the first to have onboard memory and feature a laser sensor and it surely made many gaming enthusiasts stand up. It also had the fastest polling rate (1000) of any previous one. But again, it didn’t receive the best review score, with only 3.3 out of 5 stars, and 14% 5 star rating.

Then, over the next few years, they continued to develop their gaming peripherals, predominantly for Chinese gamers but they also started to forge relationships with the likes of Microsoft and sponsor their first of many Esports gaming teams, Fnatic.

Gaming Products That Helped Razer Succeed

From 2009, Razer really started to push the envelope releasing gaming products such as the Razer Mamba, the Blackwidow and one of the world’s most popular gaming mouse, the Razer Deathadder. The Blackwidow has evolved into one of the best gaming keyboards ever made and a large part of the success of their brand.

Top Razer Products 2009/10

  • Razer Mamba wireless gaming mouse 4.1 out of 5 with 61% 5 Stars.
  • Blackwidow mechanical gaming keyboard 4.6 out of 5 80% 5 Stars.
  • Razer Deathadder gaming mouse 4.4 out of 5 74% 5 Stars.

As you can see from the review scores above, these were all great Razer gaming products, and some are still going strong today. And at that time, there were plenty of other good Razer gaming products, like the premium Kraken Forged Edition headphones. Which received rave reviews amounting to over 1000 5-star Amazon reviews from 2000 reviews in total. Not bad at all.

The same can be said for the Razer Taipan gaming mouse, it received decent reviews with over 70% 5 stars. It featured an 8200 DPI sensor and a dual-channel system. Plus Razer’s very own cutting edge software. Razer’s Synapse software, allowing you to create and save your very own personal mouse settings without lifting a finger.

Is Razer A Good Brand? Laptops 2011-16

Razer Gaming Laptops

Razer have built a reputation for producing high-quality slim and light laptops and their first was released way back in August 2011. It was a sleek and portable laptop and the first laptop made with an all aluminium chassis.

The keyboard was full-size which had 10 adaptive tactile keys for easier access to in-game controls and it also had a multi-touch LCD panel that had two modes. Amazingly, it was almost half the size and weight (6.97lbs/3.16kg) of any other gaming laptop at the time, with the nearest laptop being over 10lbs or 4.41kg.

However, the Razer Blade 17 was reviewed as being overpriced for the gaming power it could offer. But if you were willing to pay a premium for a thin and stylish laptop that you could carry about with ease, the first Razer Blade 17-inch laptop would be it.

But, in 2011, there were other bulkier and much more powerful gaming laptops you could choose, like the Alienware M17, which offered much more gaming muscle for the same price.

Razer also boosted the RAM from 8 GB to 16GB to accommodate the ever-evolving laptop tasks.

So how did it fare? Well, tech review guys at notebookcheck gave the 2016 Razer Blade 14 inch gaming laptop a respectable overall score of 84%. The audio quality received the least score with 66% but scored an impressive 89% for gaming performance.

They also reported the mouse buttons were below average, slow response times, and there was a slight whistling noise at medium to high fan speeds. Also, there was an issue with the CPU throttling which Razer quickly rectified so that was chalked off.

As for the reviews listed on Amazon, they told a completely different story, it finished with a score of only 2.5 out of 5 and there were more 1 star reviews than any other.

Gamers reported issues with the trackpad and the keyboard where some keys were not responding. There were also complaints with the display, not as clear and crisp as expected.

Whereas the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi received the most complaints. Some gamers reported, they had to restart the laptop 3 or 4 times before they could connect their devices to Bluetooth. Or connect to the internet via Wi-Fi.

Razer Blade 13.3” Ultraportable 2016

Razer released its first of many Blade Ultrabook’s ensuring they took thin and light gaming machines to the next level. This was a smart-looking laptop made with high quality military grade materials.

The 12.5-inch touch display was available in two resolutions. An ultra HD variant with 4K resolution and there was also a QHD display option. The best model had room inside for an Intel i7 7500H Kaby Lake processor with integrated Intel HD 620 graphics.

Furthermore, the storage options were either a 256GB or 512GB PCIe SSD and it came with 8GB of dual channel system memory. And it was the first laptop ever to feature individually backlit keys, along with anti-ghosting.

The first Blade Ultrabook came with a thunderbolt 3 port, so you could connect an external graphics card, either an Nvidia or AMD chip using the Razer Core box. And enjoy desktop-like graphics on a portable machine.

So how did it fare? Well, a little better than the other Razer Blade laptops listed above. It received 3.5 out of 5 and 45% 5-Stars. As for tech reviews, we found one at PCmag. They said, it was the Editors Choice for a midrange ultraportable and one of the best in any price tier.

On testing, the Stealth laptop scored highly but at that time 30fps was the minimum target for smooth gameplay without a dedicated card, and the Razer Ultrabook fell just short.

Verdict 2011-2016

From 2011 to 2016, Razer didn’t hold back, releasing several different laptop sizes, a 17 inch, a 14 inch, and the ultraportable 13-inch machine. But, they didn’t receive the best overall reviews and were known for being quite expensive and would get hot. However, they looked the part with a stylish exterior and had a top-notch build quality. And because they had the latest hardware, they would offer good gaming performance.

Is Razer A Good Brand in 2021?

After spending some time researching their history, it is clear Razer has their fingers in many pies and built a reputation for delivering high-quality gaming accessories. Including some of the best gaming mice, external keyboards, and an amazing range of gaming headsets.

Since 2011 Razer have also been busy building and fine-tuning their gaming laptop range, and now they have no fewer than four laptop sizes to choose from. Pairing the best Intel, Nvidia and now AMD hardware. They even have their very own performance-enhancing software including, the Razer Synapse 3.0, Razer Cortex, and Razer Chroma RGB which will no doubt improve your gameplay.

In addition, there are countless Pro gaming teams sponsored by Razer and their very own Team Razer has been dominating Esports gaming and accumulating millions in prize money for many years. To top it all off, they have won countless awards including, the Best of CES Award for I think, seven years running.

So, is Razer a good brand? Well, they must be doing something right for what they have achieved. But, we’ll check out the best Razer gaming products in 2021 and see how good Razer is now compared to the early days.

Razers New Laptop Range 2021

Let’s kick this off with Razer’s new beast of a gaming machine, the Razer Blade 17-inch gaming laptop released in the early part of 2021. It packs up to an Intel Core i9 11900H mobile processor, the third most powerful mobile CPU available in Intel’s armoury. Which clocks up to 4.9GHz with turbo boost and is crammed with eight CPU cores and 16 threads. They have paired that with up to the top of the line Nvidia RTX 3080 8GB graphics chip, therefore, creating one hell of a powerful gaming machine, on paper anyway.

On the build, Razer continued to use the CNC military-grade aluminium for the build materials. But they’ve added a new anti-fingerprint resistant coating to help reduce smudges on the exterior. Which is an improvement, as previously there were reviewers’ complaints that the chassis would mark easily.

So a thumbs up for that.

Furthermore, the 2021 top Razer Blade model has a 4K 120Hz touch display, and there are cheaper options with either a QHD 165Hz display or an FHD 360Hz one. The storage and RAM options are almost unlimited, even the base model can accommodate up to 4TB of SSD storage and 32GB dual-channel memory.

One huge difference I did notice, the new Blade 17 comes with dual-sided Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. So, you can, if you choose, pack in a desktop graphics card user Razer Core X, plus attach the best monitor your budget can buy. In doing so, you’ll enjoy the highest frames in games and it will speed up your graphics design workflow.

How Good Are The Ratings?

So how has the 2021 version of Razer Blade 17 fared among buyers? Well, the overall star rating increased from barely 3 out of 5 to well over 4.4. However, some grumbled gamers had issues with the battery being poor, and some have reported a flickering screen, albeit only on a few machines.

And there have been a few complaints with the keyboard saying it gets hot during heavy load. But, apart from that, it has all good with an overall customer rating of 4.1 out of 5 with 67% of them 5 stars, a vast improvement from the 2016 model.

In terms of comparison, if you compare the 2021 Razer Blade 17 inch laptop to another brand of laptop with an RTX 3080 graphics chip, you will find 65% – 70% is about average.

But hold on there, because there are also many good points to mention, with many buyers agreeing, the screen is stunning with crisp and clear detail. And, it will handle any game you throw at it even on the highest preset, and so it should, considering it pairs the best laptop hardware components there is. They all agree the build quality is excellent but we already knew that because that’s what Razor does best.

Overall, the Blade 17 is an expensive gaming laptop, but if you want the best, this may well be it. Even though there are a few niggles, it’s true, this laptop is an absolute beast when it comes to gaming. But to be honest, you don’t necessarily need the top of the line spec if it is just for gaming. In that case, it’s worth considering the Razer 17 with RTX 3060 or the RTX 3070 graphics chip, and it would save you money.

Is Razer A Good Brand? Razer Blade 15

Razer Blade 15 2021

How does the 2021 Razer Blade 15 fare among buyers? Notably, there are many configurations you can choose from. We decided to look at the ratings for the Blade 15, pairing an Nvidia RTX 3070 with a 10th Gen Intel 10750H and the components are concluded by 512GB SSD and 16GB dual-channel memory.

In addition, it only comes with one Thunderbolt 3 port, unlike the Blade 17. But still, you can enjoy plenty of external monitor gameplay. For this model with a 15.6 144Hz Full HD display, you’re looking at around $1999. But if you prefer a QHD 165Hz display and a slightly more powerful GPU, it will cost $200 or more.

Apart from the usual gripes, like it gets hot and the battery is poor, there aren’t that many negative points I can find, other than the ones mentioned above. So far, the Razer Blade 15 2021 model has received an impressive 4.5 out of 5 with 77% 5 stars.

Is Razer A Good Brand Of Headset?

Why is razer a good brand of headset

Razer has been dishing out gaming headsets ever since their first in 2009, the Razer Megalodon. And boy, have they been refining them ever since. Not only do they have countless high-quality wired and wireless headsets to choose from, like the Razer Nari and the BlackShark Pro. They also ensure their budget headsets are of high quality.

Talking of budget headsets, the most popular in the Razer portfolio is the Razer Kraken family, a firm favourite with casual gamers on a budget. Like the Razer Kraken X, featuring a bendable mic, 40mm drivers, cushioned headband and 7.1 surround sound. So, for under $60, you can enjoy clear and accurate audio during your gameplay with a comfortable headset to boot.

And for a few extra dollars, you can grab the Razer Kraken, which is slightly more premium than the Kraken X but still in their budget range. Not only do they sport all the benefits of the Kraken X. But they also include a retractable mic and 50mm drivers, gel-infused ear cushions and a thick and comfortable headband.

How do I know? Because I grabbed a pair, and you would be amazed just how good the sound is. You would only have to look at the Razer Kraken reviews to see how good they are. They average 76% 5 stars reviews across the whole family of Razer Kraken headsets.

So, if you’re asking if Razer is a good brand for budget gaming headsets, the answer is a resounding yes. Check out two of the best mid-range Razer headsets, the Kraken Ultimate and the Razer Nari, both similar in terms of customer ratings although slightly more in price than the Kraken but well worth a look.

Are Razer Wireless Headsets Good?

Are Razer Wireless Headsets Good for gaming? Well, Razer’s latest is the Razer Barracuda X, and they have certainly taken the wrap around your head audio to the very next level.

The Razer Barracuda X is designed on two fronts. Firstly, to be used at home to help you hear every in-game enemy footstep right up close. Secondly, they will be perfect as your on the go headphones so you can listen to your tunes on the move.

In addition, they can be used wirelessly using the USB transmitter or wired with the included 3.5mm analogue cable. It doesn’t matter if you are new to gaming or a seasoned pro you’ll know comfort is key.

So when the Barracuda weighs only 250g and features memory foam cushioned ear cushions, soft padded and an extremely thin headband, that’s what you will get.

Not just that, they also feature a detachable hyper-cloud cardioid mic that offers noise cancellation and will help suppress background sounds. So your voice will be heard loud and clear.

If that’s not enough, they come packed with a USB-C dongle for a high-speed wireless connection and a 3.5mm audio cable if it suits to plug them in. Also, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable and an extender to connect to those devices you have without a USB-C port.

So, what do the customers say?

For starters, the Barracuda X Wireless Razer Headset is priced just under $100 which is a decent price for its quality, and so far, they have been received well, racking up a respectable 4.5 out of 5 with 67% 5-stars.

Buyers have said the Barracuda wireless headset is great value for the money, but there are some who have mentioned the USB-C dongle is too wide and could interfere with adjacent ports. And they’re not as comfortable as the cheaper Razer Kraken headsets. As for the positive feedback, there were plenty, including, great sound quality, comfortable to wear, and the battery life is good so there were more pros, than cons.

So, does that make Razer a good brand? Yes, because they have designed a decent wireless headset for casual gamers under $100. Although, they are very similar to the SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless headset in terms of spec and price. But the Barracuda would be my choice if my budget was tight and I was after a new headset with wireless capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Razer Worth The Money?

Yes, Razer’s gaming products, I believe, are worth the money. However, in the early days, it may not be the case. Because you would have found many other gaming products for less money that would perform much better. Even though they may not look as good.

But, over the last few years, their products have begun to shine, with their gaming products landing at the top of many pro gamers best-of lists. Their build quality has got so much better, and so have their performance.

The Razer Blade gaming laptops are a perfect example because they are so much better now than when they released their first in 2011. Ok, like with all brands, there will be unhappy customers. But if you take the time to look at how much their customer reviews have improved since then, you will see, as I did, the difference is night and day.

Is Razer a Luxury Brand?

Yes, Razer is a luxury brand. Known for their high ticket gaming products, but they have stayed true to their goal and built an armoury of gaming products to meet the needs of gamers.

Although, their gaming products are pricier than most other brands, they are high quality and aesthetically pleasing. It doesn’t matter if your gaming device of choice is a PC, a laptop, a mobile phone or a gaming console the gaming brand, Razer will have something for you.

They also have many gaming products in the budget range, like the Razer Kraken family of gaming headsets. These are also high-quality, I own a pair myself, and you would think they were luxury gaming items with how they feel. Made with high-quality materials and extremely comfortable to use.

What Is Razers New Laptop?

Razer’s new laptops consist of the latest hardware from Nvidia and Intel. This year’s laptops were the first from Razer to add AMD mobile processors into the equation. So what do they have? Well, they have the new Razer Blade 14 pairing the latest AMD 5000 series CPUs, the Ryzen 5900HX, together with either an Nvidia RTX 3060, 3070, or an RTX 3080. Now that’s some power.

Then there’s the Blade 15 and 17-inch gaming laptops, accommodating the top of the line Nvidia RTX 3080 but are Intel-based. The best one has an 11th Gen 8 Core i9 11900H processor paired with an RTX 3080 and a decent 60Hz OLED 4K Touch display.

Finally, there’s the Blade Stealth which was the world’s first Ultrabook laptop. They offer less power in terms of graphics processing as they have Nvidia’s GTX cards but with Intel 11th Gen processors. Perfect for gamers on the go.

Final Thoughts…

So, is Razer a good brand? Well, they have built a reputation for delivering high-quality gaming products, and clearly, they have achieved their goal. They have built a superb portfolio of gaming products to meet the needs of gamers.

Superb high spec and budget gaming laptops, keyboards, headsets, mice for small hands, desktop PCs, mouse mats, and software. And, it doesn’t stop there, because they have an abundance of products in the mobile niche and products for the console community. Not to mention, a million-dollar award winning gaming team.

But does that make Razer a good brand? No, because their products also need to be of high quality. But I think Razer now offers that. Previously their gaming products were known for being highly priced but with poor build quality, even though their gaming products have always been aesthetically pleasing.

But in 2021, their build quality is much higher, and it clearly shows when you look at their overall customer reviews.

Finally, I know Razer is not every gamers favourite brand but it’s one of mine. I also know that you will come across many gaming products from other well-known brands that could perform better and for less money. But, would they look as good? Maybe, maybe not.
