Is Razer A Good Gaming Brand?

Razer Gaming Products

Is Razer a good gaming brand? Well, Razer gaming products have been around since the late ’90s. Their first being the big and beefy Boomslang gaming mouse. Of which there were two models, the 1000 and the more expensive Boomslang 2000. This was the first of its kind to use high-resolution encoder technology.

But was it a good Razer product? Well, if you look back at the reviews it got and one in particular from tech giant Eurogamer. Yes, the Razer Boomslang received a respectable score of 9 out of 10.

Although, not long after releasing the Boomslang, their parent company Karma ceased to exist. This was due to financial issues during the dot-com era. But, we didn’t have to wait too long before the Razer brand reappeared again, which was in 2005.

So after major investments from various government sources. Plus, the dreams of two dedicated gamers, the CEO Min-Liang Tan and the former President Robert Krakoff Razer was back. And their main goal was to build a brand that creates high-quality gaming products that meet the needs of gamers. And so it began, a brand made by gamers, for gamers.

So, did they succeed? Keep reading, we will see..

Were Razer Gaming Products Good In The Early days?

The first product launched as Razer Inc was the Razer Diamondback mouse. Which is one of the best-selling gaming mice of all time. It had the fastest transmitter sensor and the first to integrate a light encoder. The Diamondback gave Razer the first of many global awards. This time for featuring on-the-fly sensitivity. But unfortunately, received poor reviews on Amazon, finishing with only 3.2 out of 5 stars.

Next up, Razer released their second product and the first of many Razer Vipers. Popular amongst casual gamers and still is today. And, I own one myself, and it’s a joy to use and still going strong after two years of use. After the Viper came the Razer Copperhead mouse.

This was the first gaming mouse to feature onboard memory and a laser sensor. This is the one that made many gamers stand up. It had the fastest polling rate (1000) of any previous mouse. But again, it didn’t receive the best review rating, finishing with only 3.3 out of 5 stars.

Over the next few years, Razer continued to develop its gaming peripherals. And forging relationships with the likes of Microsoft and sponsoring the first of many Esports gaming teams. Fnatic.

So, not the best start for Razer.

The Gaming Products That Helped Razer Succeed

In 2009, Razer made a bold move forward with their release of the Mamba and Blackwidow. The success of these products has helped them develop into one of today’s most innovative gaming brands. While also releasing another bestseller -the Deathadder gaming mouse.

2009 Razer Product Review Ratings

  • Razer Mamba wireless gaming mouse 4.1 out of 5 with 61% 5 Stars.
  • Blackwidow mechanical gaming keyboard 4.6 out of 5 80% 5 Stars.
  • Razer Deathadder gaming mouse 4.4 out of 5 74% 5 Stars.

As you can see from their early Amazon reviews, they were all great Razer gaming products. Some are still going strong today. Like the Kraken Forged Edition headphones, that are great for gamers who want premium sound and an unmatched design.

They received over 1000 5-star Amazon reviews from 2000 total, and it looks like these babies still hold up today. (Razer also released plenty other decent peripherals during that period).

The same can be said for the Razer Taipan gaming mouse, they also received decent reviews with over 70% of them were 5 stars. It featured an 8200 DPI sensor. Plus the first with Razer’s cutting edge Synapse software.

Was Razer A Good Brand For Laptops 2011-16?

Razer Gaming Laptops

Razer released their first all-aluminium laptop back in August 2011. It was sleek, with a portable design which made it an instant hit with consumers on a quest for something light. And thin enough to carry around every day without weighing them down too much. Or causing back pain after hours spent working at their desk.

This laptop was almost half the size and weight (6.97lbs/3.16kg) of any other gaming laptop at that time. With the nearest weighing over 10lbs or 4.41kg. Plus, it had a full-size keyboard, which had ten adaptive tactile keys for easier access to in-game controls. It also had a multi-touch LCD panel that had two modes.

However, some said the first Razer Blade was slightly overpriced for the gaming power it could offer. Yet, if you were willing to pay a premium for a thin and stylish laptop, the first Razer Blade 17-inch would of been it. But, in 2011, there were other bulkier and much more powerful gaming laptops you could choose. Laptops like the Alienware M17, which offered much more gaming muscle for the same price.

Tech review site notebookcheck gave the 2016 Razer Blade 14 inch gaming laptop a respectable overall score of 84%. They said the audio quality deserved a score of 66%. Yet, the Blade 14 got an impressive 89% for its gaming performance.

Notebookcheck also reported the mouse buttons were below average. With slow response times, and there was a slight whistling noise at medium to high fan speeds. There was an issue with the CPU throttling, however, this was something that Razer soon rectified.

However, customer reviews listed on Amazon for this same product told a completely different story. The first Razer Blade 14 gaming laptop finished with a score of 2.5 out of 5 stars and there were more 1 star reviews than any other.

After reading these reviews gamers reported issues with both the trackpad and the keyboard. Plus, there were also a few complaints about the display not being as clear and crisp as expected for the price. The Bluetooth and Wi-Fi received the most complaints, as some gamers had reported that they had to restart the laptop 3 or 4 times before it would connect to Wi-Fi.

2016 Razer Blade 13.3-Inch Ultraportable

In 2016, Razer released its first of many Ultrabook’s ensuring they took thin and light gaming machines to the next level. A smart-looking laptop made with high quality materials that would surely last gamers all day long!

The tiny touch display was available in two resolutions, an ultra HD variant with 4K resolution, plus a QHD display option as well. The best model they released came with an Intel i7 7500H Kaby Lake processor with integrated Intel HD 620 graphics.

Moreover, the storage options were either a 256GB or a 512GB PCIe SSD. It also had 8GB of dual channel memory, and this was their first small laptop to feature single backlit keys. Which included anti-ghosting keyboard technology. It was also the first with thunderbolt connectivity. This means you could connect an external graphics card, using their very own Razer Core box. Thus, enjoying desktop-like graphics on a tiny portable machine.

So how did Razer’s first Ultrabook fare? Well, clearly it did much better than the first Razer Blade 17 laptop. Receiving an impressive 3.5 out of 5 and 45% 5-Stars. As for tech reviews, we found one at PCmag. They said, it was at the time the Editors Choice for a midrange ultraportable and one of the best in any price tier”.

So Was Razer A Good Gaming Laptop Brand 2016?

Clearly from 2011 to 2016, Razer didn’t hold back. They released several laptop sizes including, 17, 14 and 13-inch models. And after going through reviews we found online. Some of the pros are that Razer offered ok customer service. Plus, they had great quality products, and there were plenty of options to choose from.

On the flip side, some said their prices were on the higher side, and some of their laptops would get hot. But in the early days of laptop gaming, all laptop brands had this same problem. Some still do.

Evidently from 2011 to 1016 Razer gaming laptops looked great, with a big thanks to their stylish exterior combined with high quality build materials. And at that time, Razer gaming laptops were some of the best available.

Plus, they have some of the best gaming software on the market. Including Razer Synapse, Razer Cortex, and Razer Chroma. They’ve also been dominating Esports gaming for years. And we’ve not even mentioned the countless awards they’ve received. Including the Best of CES Award that they’ve won seven years on the bounce.

So, is Razer a good brand now in 2022? Well, they must be doing something right for what they’ve achieved since 2005. But let’s check out the best Razer gaming products this year and see how good Razer gaming products are now.

Let’s kick this off with the Razer Blade 17-inch high-performance gaming laptop. Which was released in the early part of 2022 and packs up to an 12th Gen Intel Core i9 12900HK mobile processor with14 cores and clocks up to a whopping 5.0GHz. They’ve paired that with the latest Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti 16GB graphics chip. Thus, creating one hell of a powerful gaming machine.

On the build, has Razer continued to use the CNC military-grade aluminium. But, they’ve added a new anti-fingerprint resistant coating to help reduce smudges. Which is an improvement, as before, gamers complained previously the chassis would mark easily. As for the display, the top model has up to a 4K 144Hz display. Other options include a sharp and smooth 240Hz QHD, an Ultra fast 360Hz or a 165Hz display.

The storage and RAM options are almost unlimited, with 4TBs of SSD storage and 64GB RAM possible. One huge difference, is that the new 2022 Blade 17 comes with dual-sided Thunderbolt 4 port. So, you can, pack in a desktop graphics card using Razer Core X. Plus, attach the best gaming monitor your budget can afford.

How Good Are The Ratings For The Razer Blade 17 2021 Version?

Unfortunately, we are still in January and Razer have only just released their new line-up of Razer Blade laptops. This means there won’t be much to go on from customer reviews. However, we will update this post in due course.

For now let’s concentrate on how good is the 2021 version of the Razer Blade 17 laptop and how it fared among buyers? Well, the star rating increased from 3 out of 5 to well over 4.6. Yet, some grumbled gamers had issues with the battery being poor. Some have reported a flickering screen, albeit only on a few machines.

There’s also been complaints with the keyboard saying it gets hot during heavy load. But, there are many good points to mention. With many buyers agreeing, the screen is stunning with crisp and clear detail. And they all agree their build quality is excellent, but we already knew that because that’s what Razor does best.

The Blade 17 is an expensive gaming laptop, but if you want the best, this may well be it.

What About The 2022 Razer Blade 15, Will This Make Razer A Good Brand?

How does the 2021 Razer Blade 15 fare among buyers?

One thing is for sure there are many configurations you can choose from. But for this comparison we decided to look at the ratings for the Blade 15 with an Nvidia RTX 3080. Paired with an Intel Core i7-11800H processor, 1TB SSD and 32GB dual-channel memory.

It comes with dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, so you can enjoy plenty of dual monitor gameplay. For the Blade 15 with a 15.6 144Hz Full HD display, you’re looking at around $1999. But if you prefer a QHD 165Hz display and a more powerful GPU, it will cost a few bucks more.

Apart from the usual gripes, like it gets hot and the battery is not the best. There aren’t that many negative reviews, that I can find anyhow. So far, the Razer Blade 15 2021 model has received an impressive 4.3 out of 5 with 71% 5 stars. Which is a huge improvement from their 2011 – 2016 Razer Blade 15 laptop reviews.

For a few extra dollars, you can grab the Razer Kraken Ultimate. Which is a more premium headset than the Kraken X but still in the budget headset range. These bad boys include a retractable mic, huge 50mm drivers, gel-infused ear cushions and a thick and comfortable headband to boot.

As for the positive feedback, there were plenty. Including, they offer great sound quality, and they’re comfortable to wear. Some have said that the battery life is good. Yet, I did notice that there were more pros than cons. So it’s a thumbs up for the Barracuda X.

So, is Razer a good brand for headsets? Yes, great wireless headsets for a good price.

Is Razer Worth The Money?

Are Razer gaming products worth the money? Yes, I believe, they are. Yet, in the early days, it may have not been the case. There were many other gaming products for less money that would perform much better. Even though they may not look as good as Razer’s.

But, over the last few years, their products have begun to shine, with many of Razers gaming products landing at the top of many pro gamers best-of lists. Their build quality has got so much better, and so have their performance.

The Razer Blade gaming laptops are a perfect example of this because they are so much better now than when they released their first in 2011. Ok, like with all brands, there will be unhappy customers. But if you take the time to look at how much their customer reviews have improved since then, you will see, as I did, the difference is night and day.

Razer’s gaming products are now worth the money and they have some of the best gaming laptops, gaming headsets, keyboards and mice that money can buy.

Now check out these bad boys: Most Expensive Gaming Headsets?

Still, their gaming products are pricier than most other brands, but they are high quality and aesthetically pleasing. It doesn’t matter if your gaming device of choice is a PC, a laptop, a mobile phone or a gaming console Razer will have something for you.

They also have many gaming products in the budget range, like the Razer Kraken family of gaming headsets. I own a pair myself, and you would think they were luxury gaming items with how they feel. Made with high-quality materials and very comfortable to use.

What Is Razers New Laptop?

Razer’s new laptops consist of the latest hardware from Nvidia and Intel. This is the first year (2021) Razer added AMD mobile processors into the equation.

So what laptops do they have? Well, they have the new Razer Blade 14 pairing the latest AMD 5000 series CPUs, the Ryzen 5900HX, together with either an Nvidia RTX 3060, 3070, or an RTX 3080. Now that’s some power and it’s new in 2021.

Then there’s the Blade 15 and 17-inch gaming laptops, accommodating the top of the line Nvidia RTX 3080 but these laptops are Intel-based. The best one has an 11th Gen 8 Core i9 11900H processor paired with an RTX 3080 and a decent 60Hz OLED 4K Touch display. Again, that’s some power but also costly.

Finally, there’s the Blade Stealth which was the world’s first Ultrabook laptop. They offer less powerful graphics processers, with Nvidia’s GTX cards but with Intel 11th Gen processors. Perfect for gamers on the go.
