Unfortunately, laptops can get hot under heavy load, this is something that you cannot help. Manufacturers are squeezing much more powerful hardware into smaller spaces. Yet, even with all the advancements in laptop cooling, there will always be cases where your laptop might overheat.
This could be due to a lack of proper ventilation or you’ve used it for too long without efficient cooling. No matter what though, this could lead not only towards a shorter lifespan but worse, no more laptop at all.
So what could be the cause? Let’s see.
1. Blocked Air Vents.
One of the most common reasons for laptop overheating is when there’s a blockage in the air vents. If air doesn’t reach your laptop’s hardware because someone has put something over the vents. This could easily raise the internal temperatures. So, if you’re having trouble with your laptop overheating, be sure to check ALL vents to ensure that they’re not covered up.
2. Laptop Fans Covered.
Another common reason why your laptop is getting too hot is because the fans on the base of the laptop are not able to push heat away. You might be using it on a flat surface that’s not suitable for your type of laptop. Or worse, you could be using it sat back on your bed, or resting on a pillar. No of these places are any good.
So make sure your laptop is elevated where possible, this will allow for the most amount of airflow. Plus, there’s less chance of build up of dust and fluff from it resting on a place such as your bed, lap, or couch.
3. Your Fans Have Stopped/Slowed Down.
Gaming laptops are designed to operate at high temperatures with some able to run up to 100 degrees Celsius. Yes, that’s right ONE HUNDRED DEGREES. Crazy right?
Anyway, these types of laptop need help from the fans seated inside to keep them ticking over nicely. So, if they’re not running how they should, this could raise the operating temperatures very quickly. You can use software such as Speedfan to check how well your fans are running.
4. Problems With Your Hardware.
Poorly configured hardware can lead to having a laptop that overheats. Your CPU or GPU may have to work harder than before and this extra work will result in higher temperatures. The same can be said, if you had a virus or some sort of malware festering inside your laptop, this could also be a cause of higher temps than normal.

Laptops aren’t supposed to exceed a certain temperature. The latest hardware from AMD, Nvidia, and Intel have guidelines on what is the max temperature to run their GPUs and CPUs. But, if you feel that it’s getting too hot, there are many things to do right away to bring this down, or risk permanent damage.
Here’s 5 signs to look out for that will let you know it’s time to quit. Stop everything, turn off your laptop, and let it cool down naturally. If you don’t it may be to late, you could experience instability and performance issues.
- Your application, games, and programmes start to freeze.
- Your laptop screen suddenly goes black, and your laptop switches off.
- Error messages appear on screen, warning your laptop is too hot!
- The keyboard area is much warmer than normal.
- Your fans start running at full speed, during simple tasks.

- The area’s where the CPU, RAM, Battery are located feels extremely hot.

Learning how to fix your laptop if it’s overheating without taking it apart will help take away your worries. Besides laptops, in general, can be expensive and the stress it could bring from overheating doesn’t bear thinking about.
The simple answer is to buy a laptop cooling pad and then positioned your laptop correctly. (as above) It may also be feasible to open up your laptop, and remove dust that could be restricting heat dissipation.
However, some people will tell you that this will void your warranty. That may be true, but if it’s for an overheating problem, then there’s no real reason not to attempt opening up the case. But that should be the last resort.
So before pulling out the screwdriver, consider the following steps listed below. Hopefully, they’ll work for you, just like they’ve worked for me. And, you’ll fix your overheating laptop without taking it apart?
Your Laptops Overheating: Check What’s Causing it.
A good idea is to start by finding out what part of your laptop seems to be the hottest. It could be that your graphics card (GPU) is overheating or it could be the central processor (CPU). May be it’s something else entirely.
The good thing is you can check your laptops temperature in real-time and there’s loads of free software out there that’s perfect for this task. One such programme would be HWMonitor. Which is a hardware monitoring program that reads your laptops voltages, temperatures, and fan speed in real-time.

How To Use HWMonitor
It would be best to run the programmes or games you usually use when your laptop gets the hottest. Then start up the HW monitoring software and see if you can get an indication on what’s making your laptop so hot. You’ll then know what you need to do to rectify your overheating laptop.
If Your CPU Is Too Hot To Handle?
If it shows your CPU temperatures are too high. It may be that your laptop is overheating because the processor is running too many applications at once. Or you’ve got a ton of processes going on in the background.
If so, it’s clear your computer isn’t able to keep up while your CPU is running 100 miles an hour trying to process too much information. Which will result in high CPU temps. But don’t worry there’s a few things you can do.
First, click, CTRL+ALT+DELETE to bring up the task Manager Sheet. This sheet will show what’s using all the electricity and allow for quick cuts so that only important processes are left active. All without slowing down performance too much. While also helping to identify which processors are not Essential.
You can also disable programmes you don’t need, Right Click + Click Disable. Just make sure you know what to disable and what to keep. If you unsure a quick Google search will help identify the programme and what it does.
Plus, it’s also a good idea to check what programmes start up every time you boot your laptop. Click the Start-up Tab, (same sheet) to disable a start up programme. You can Right Click and then click Disable Start-Up.
Windows Task Manager Sheet
You can also use the task manager sheet to see how the CPU is behaving in real-time. Click the Performance Tab, and then click on the CPU OPTION. It is best to be running an intensive application while doing this.
Adjust Power Setting/Create Custom Power Plan
Disabling programmes and apps that you don’t need will only help so far. Another tried and tested process that will help if your laptop is overheating is to change the default power settings.
You can also create a custom power plan that you can use for intensive tasks such as gaming, video editing, or any other resource-hungry software you use. Well, anything really that requires your processor to work hard.
Changing Power Settings
- Press Windows + X Key
- Click on Power Options
- Scroll Down to Related Settings, Click Additional Power Settings
- Click Change Plan Settings
- Next, Click Change Advanced Power Settings

Shown below, are the settings I use with my laptop. They’ve worked perfectly for me for some time now. Fingers crossed. I’ve yet to experience issues with my current laptop overheating, even during intense gaming sessions.
By all means, use these to see how they work for you. If you don’t see any improvements, play around with the processor power tabs and see what works best for you and your laptop.
Note: You’ll notice the tab “Processor Performance Boost Mode” is visible on my power options sheet in the image below. Unless you’ve enabled this tab it won’t be visible on your power options sheet.

Why The Graphics Card Is Making Your Laptop Overheat?
Gaming is one of the most strenuous tasks you can do on any laptop. This is when the GPU is working the hardest and the harder it has to work, the more heat it will generate. If you’re a gamer, then it shouldn’t be a surprise if it’s the hottest component you have.
There could several reasons why your GPU is too hot. Like, inadequate cooling. Blocked vents, which means no cool air passing through. Even a rise in room temperature can lead to higher GPU temperatures.
It could also be that the settings in the game you’re playing might be too high for your system to handle. Again this can have an effect on the temperature of your graphics card. But fortunately, the latest hardware have a failsafe in place if they become too hot.
What will happen is they will throttle down performance and your screen may go black, then your laptop may shut down. As a said, don’t worry if this has happened before because it’s there to prevent unrepairable damage.
If you keep running your hardware at high temps, it could lead to reduced performance, instability, and shorter lifespan. It’s then you should start worrying and start making plans to put some heat-reducing measures in place.
Best Way To Check The Graphics Card Temperature?
While it’s not always easy to tell what temperatures are normal, or preferable for your specific laptop. There is one thing you can do. Check the GPU (graphics card) temperature during gameplay in order to see how hot it gets.
If it’s above the recommended limits, there could be collateral damage throughout all aspects of your laptop including, performance speed etc…
One of the best pieces of software to use is GPU-Z, it’s free to download and easy to install and use. You’ll be surprised just how much helpful information you can get from using this software.
Download GPU-Z software
First, install and run the software. Next. Click the Sensors tab. Then look for the ‘GPU Temperature’ box, it should be the third one down. You’ll notice it’s quite low and so it should be seeing you’re not running anything but Windows. Next, click on settings, the three lines at the top of the window. Click the Sensors tab and make sure to tick the ‘Refresh sensors while GPU-Z is in the background’, if it isn’t already. Now minimize GPU-Z.
Tech Power Up – GPU-Z Software
Next, it’s time to run one of your games that’s GPU intensive, and play for around 15 minutes. When you think you’ve had enough quit the game and then bring up the GPU-Z Window. Next, click the small black arrow next to the ‘GPU Temperature’ box and select ‘Show Highest Reading’
This will be the highest temperature your GPU reached during your gaming session. If your GPU is close to or exceeding 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit). And, your fans are working very loudly under load, then your laptop may be overheating.
A good temperature is between 70-90 degrees (158-194 degrees Fahrenheit). Although this would depend on the hardware you have. It would be best to find out the best temperature your particular GPU before proceeding.
What To Do If Your GPU is Overheating?
So, you’ve done the tests, and you’ve got a problem! Your graphics card on your laptop is overheating. If you continue and do nothing, then you’re in serious danger of cutting its lifespan. So you must do something now!
Start by ensuring no dust or dirt is preventing the fans from doing their job. If you don’t want to open the chassis, then blow compressed air through the vents. You can also grab a vacuum and run it over the vents and exhausts.
Next, make sure you elevate the laptop when in use. For this, you can use a laptop stand. Even better, a laptop cooling pad, and let’s be honest they’re not that expensive. Would you rather lose performance? I didn’t think so!
Nest step, ensure all drivers are up to date. Not just the Nvidia or AMD graphics drivers. But also the drivers for your peripherals and don’t forget Windows! Plus, ensure your software is up to date.
You must also consider toning down the graphics settings in your games, and you can also cap the frames rates. This will save precious resources and most importantly, power. Remember power, equals heat. Also during game time, make sure no other programmes are running that use the GPUs.
How To Prevent Your Laptop From Overheating In The future?
Unfortunately laptops are prone to overheating because they’re small and compact and they’re packed with powerful components. There are some laptops that run cooler than others but even the best laptops will get hot.
But there is a few things you can do prevent your laptop overheating so you can enjoy the best gaming experience without worrying. It’s worth noting, keeping your laptop cool will take a continuous effort, which is something you have to accept. That said, it would be the same for a PC.
Buy A Laptop Cooling Pad
It’s important for those with laptops that have vents/grilles on the base and exhausts on the sides (most gaming laptops) to elevate the laptop at all times. Yes you can use a book, or something similar but that’s not the best option. The perfect solution would be to buy a laptop cooling pad (shown above) or a laptop stand.
This way, there’s plenty of airflow from all sides. If you don’t have one, there are other things you can use but they won’t be as effect. Also, if you have to use you laptop on the bed or something similar, then make sure there’s something placed underneath like a book. So it’s not directly sat on the surface attracting dust.

Keep Your Hardware/Software Updated
One of the main reasons laptops overheat is because of outdated drivers. Drivers are the software that allows hardware to communicate with the operating system. Outdated drivers can cause conflicts and errors, which can lead to overheating.
It’s therefore important to make sure you have the latest drivers for all your hardware. As well as your graphics card and Windows operating system. You can usually find updated drivers on the website of your laptop’s manufacturer. Or by using a tool like Driver Booster.
Here are a few reasons you should keep your laptop updated:
- To ensure compatibility with other software and devices
- To fix security vulnerabilities (highly Important)
- To improve system performance
- And to stop overheat problems.
It’s important to clean your laptop to avoid overheating. Dust and dirt can get into the fans and vents. This can prevent them from working properly and then cause the computer to overheat.
Cleaning your laptop regularly will help keep it running smoothly, and it will also extend its lifespan. Although, the only way you can clean inside without taking it apart is by spraying compressed air through the vents. Just make sure you unplug your laptop before cleaning it and use a soft cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
You can also use an alcohol spray to clean the keyboard and display. But, do not spray directly on the surface. It’s best to spray onto a dry cloth and only then wipe the surfaces. But be careful not to damage the keys or cables.
Minimize Intense Processes
Your laptop may get hot when you’re using certain processes that are intense. Such as web browsers with video Flash. To keep the CPU cool, avoid these types of processors by using a blocker for the browser. That will allow you to only enable it when necessary. This way, online videos will not be the culprit that heats up your laptop too much.
Many PC games are CPU intensive, so be careful when playing certain games. If you have issues with your CPU getting hot. Before downloading the games, do a quick google search to see if the game heavily relies on the CPU.
Also, when it’s game time make sure there’s no other programme or app is running while your game is loading. You’ll need your CPU and GPUs full attention, and also RAM to enjoy the best possible gaming performance.
Change The Fan Speed
Your laptop may be getting hot because your fans aren’t running fast enough. This may mean they’re not cooling your GPU and CPU like they used to. And there lies your problem.
You can try and change the fan speed to be more aggressive. The only downside is you will get a louder fan noise than before. Yet, you may enjoy lower laptop temperatures and when you’re experiencing laptop overheating issues, it’s worth a shot.
Also get prepared, because not all laptop manufacturers allow you to change the fan speed. You can take a look in your BIOS settings and see if the fan settings can be changed. If not, you can use MSI Afterburner. This software will show if your laptop model allows you to configure the fans, or not.

The CPU Thermometer software is a simple and effective Windows program that shows the temperature for each of your computer’s cores. You can choose between Celsius or Fahrenheit reading, too!
Real Temp monitors your processor’s temperature to make sure you don’t over do it too much. It also keeps track of the highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded on your machine, so if they’ve been outside what is considered safe limits then Real Temp will let them know!
We’ve already mentioned Speedfan above, but a list wouldn’t be complete with out it. Speedfan is a lightweight program that can monitor your computer’s internal sensors and determine the temperature of any hard drive in use.
