How to check why my laptop will not turn on

My Laptop wont turn on

There could be several reasons why your laptop wont turn on, and we will go through each possible reason in detail. The first thing you need to figure out is what could have caused the problem so we will start by looking at the laptops external cabling. Which can be a major source of failure.

Other points of failure on your laptop, are the keyboard, the screen, internal drives, express card devices and the power cables. But, unlike a traditional gaming PC, a gaming laptop does not have many internal wires. Which is a common cause of failure on a gaming PC.

And, you can have the best gaming laptop accessories in the world, but they can still cause you problems. You may have purchased a new docking station, gaming mouse or even an external keyboard. Any of these laptop accessories can cause problems if they arrive faulty. So, the first point of call would be to look at your power supply and your laptop battery.

Does my laptop have enough power and how to check my laptop battery?

Does your laptop power light come on when you plug in the power cable? Suggesting you do or do not have power coming from the AC power socket or better known as the plug on the wall.

If the answer is no. You can plug another device into the same AC power socket, an alarm clock or lamp will be fine, and see if they work. If they work the socket is not the problem.

Now you know it is not the socket.

So, now check the cable.

First you need to check for any signs of damage, like cracks or tears. Can you see any coloured wires showing?

If you do find damage, the safest thing you can do is to purchase another cable. And an adaptor if that is also damaged.

But, please check the amperage and the voltage requirements for your laptop.

Also another point to mention is, each brand of laptop has a different model and type of adaptor. So make sure you purchase an adaptor compatible with your machine.

And, if you do need to buy a new power adaptor for your laptop, make sure that you purchase an adaptor with the same or higher amount of wattage than is required.

TIP: For maximum benefit, you can purchase an AC adaptor that includes a USB charging port, and interchangeable charging points.

How to check or replace the fuse from my laptop plug

You have checked the cable and adaptor for damage, it is also worth checking the fuse in your plug.

First, test to see if the fuse needs changing.

To do this, you will need a spare AC power cord to plug into your power adaptor, then into the wall socket. If this works fine, then you will need to change out the fuse in your laptops original plug.

To change the fuse, you can follow these simple steps below.

You may have a plug without screws, and the fuse will just pop out, making this part easier for you.

If that’s not you, then please continue.

What you will need is a small Phillip’s screwdriver; a pair of plyers will be handy and a flat clean service to work on.

Make sure you purchase the correct amp fuse.

If you are unsure, check the base of the laptop or the laptop power box. Details about the amperage will be on the white info stickers.

  1. Disconnect the cable from your adaptor
  2. Carefully unscrew the fuse covering.
  3. Use a pair of pliers or the screwdriver to carefully take out the fuse. (Be careful not to dislodge the plug pins)
  4. Insert the replacement fuse into the metal brackets.
  5. Replace the cover and screw it back on.

Job well done!

So, if your fuse is fine, then the problem could be with the battery.

How to check if your laptop battery is working

The first step would be to check that your battery is installed into the laptop properly.

I know, that sounds a bit simple. But it does happen.

Laptop battery capacity report

You can use the laptop battery report to measure the capacity of your battery and compare this to what you should get from a new battery.

If you compare the difference between the two capacities and these numbers are close, then you should not worry too much at this stage about replacing your laptop battery.

When should you replace your laptop battery?

You would need to replace your battery when your laptop power light does not come on when you are not plugged into the outlet. But, the battery was charged fully for the recommended time.

Or your battery failed the capacity report test.

You would also need to change the battery when your battery is hot to the touch. The best option would be to either replace the battery or return the laptop for a replacement or service.

How to take care of your laptop battery

But if you do not care for your battery, you will run into problems. Your battery will stop holding charge and if done correctly your battery will last much longer. You must agree, that will not be a good thing. Especially if you have no access to power and you have to rely on your battery.
