MSI Vs ASUS Gaming Laptop History
It’s been an interesting few weeks. I’ve spent hours researching and talking to other people who own both brands for their opinion on this matter. Which wasn’t too difficult because there were plenty around! But now that the dust has settled on my findings…
I found that ASUS was voted the best laptop brand in 2020. But, what was also clear was what made each company so successful. They both know how important customer satisfaction really can be!
In a previous article where I compared ASUS vs Acer laptops whose laptops were also very similar. ASUS got the nod on design and offered a broader range of Nvidia RTX 30 series laptops. At first glance, MSI has a similar batch that could rival Acer and maybe many other gaming laptop brands out there.
But which laptops are better between MSI vs ASUS? Well, there is only one way to find out. Yet, before we get ahead of ourselves here, let’s take a quick look at their history.
ASUS History: Is ASUS a Good Brand?
Let’s start with ASUS. So, here we go, ASUS was formed in the late eighties by a group of young Taiwanese engineers. Four of which had previously worked for Acer. Yet, in the early days, things were not all that rosy, they suffered design issues, amongst other things.
That was until Mr Shih, another Taiwanese engineer, took on the daunting task of turning things around for ASUS. He went on to recruit the most talented engineers to swiftly get things back on track for ASUS.
Fast forward to 2006, ASUS decided to dip their feet into portable gaming. They joined up with Gigabyte, and their sub-brand was born, the Republic of Gamers (ROG). Their products include desktop PCs, monitors, Netbooks and smartphones. As well as high-spec gaming laptops. Such as the ROG Zephyrus and the all-mighty ASUS Rog Strix. As well as, their ASUS Tuf mid-range and budget laptops.
What is so impressive about ASUS, since their first gaming notebooks in 2007. The ASUS G1 and G2. They’ve produced the world’s first on many gaming products. Including the first touchscreen laptop, and the biggest and fastest 4K 120Hz gaming display. Plus, they’ve won a staggering 4000+ awards for their troubles. So to answer the question, is ASUS a good laptop brand? It’s a resounding yes.
MSI History: Is MSI a Good Brand?
MSI is another Taiwanese tech company who have smashed the gaming laptop niche. But first, can I just say, “there must be something special in the Taiwanese water as there are so many amazing brands in Taiwan”.
Like ASUS, they were also founded by a group of talented engineers. Who had previously worked together, In this case, that company was Sony.
Over the years. MSI built a reputation for manufacturing motherboards and graphics cards. Yet, it wasn’t until the 21st century MSI announced itself onto the gaming notebook scene.
When they released the X320 Laptop. And no, it wasn’t high-spec. But, it was the world’s lightest and slimmest 13 inch notebook.
2008 MSI Partnered With Finatic
MSI has well-earned its reputation for producing high-performance gaming laptops. Motherboards, graphics cards, and other PC gaming hardware. Their gaming products are commonly used by professional gamers and eSports teams around the world. Because they’ll know that MSI hardware will give them the competitive edge.
In 2015, MSI squeezed into the world’s top 5 laptop brands and by the end of 2016, they managed to outgun the lot and sell more units than any other laptop brand in the world. Which is no easy feat, when you have the likes of HP, Lenovo, and Acer to compete with. Plus, they’ve won many awards over the years for laptops like the MSI GS70 Stealth, and the GT60 2PE Dominator PRO amongst others.
If you’re looking for a reliable brand to take your gaming experience to the next level. MSI should definitely be at the top of your list. Not only do they make some of the best hardware on the market. But their products come with a comprehensive warranty that will protect your investment for years to come.

Verdict: ASUS Vs MSI Laptop
In this comparison, both laptops can have up to the same Intel i9 11th Gen processor. But, when it comes to the graphics. The ASUS Zephyrus has the higher-powered RTX 3080 graphics card variant. Which means that bit of extra gaming performance. (Great for both gamers and video editors)
If you didn’t know, there are 28 possible variants to Nvidia’s RTX 30 series laptop graphics cards. Split into different variants for clock speed and TGP (total graphics power). And there’s a possible 11 Nvidia RTX 3080s in circulation. The ASUS laptop actually has one of the strongest with a total TGP of 140W, compare that to the 90W variant packed inside the MSI Stealth, it’s quite a difference.
The Build: MSI Vs ASUS Laptop
Both have a simple but professional-looking design. They look sharp and sleek with a core black chassis that is solid and should withstand a knock. There’s no flashy backlights or RGB elements on either laptop.
There is one notable difference, the ASUS ROG keyboard isn’t the normal run of the mill. It tilts up about 5 degrees which does look cool and should make it easier to type due to a more comfortable position. Not only that, but it will allow for better airflow because of the placement of the fans. Although you will need to take extra care, so dust and dirt don’t creep inside. If it did, it could be a problem.
Both laptops have the full spread of per-key RGB and optical-mechanical key switches. Which should provide good responsiveness for fast-action gameplay. Plus, they have the same key-travel distance of 1.9mm.
Display: ASUS vs MSI Laptop
Both laptops have the full line up of display options. Including 4K. But the MSI Stealth has three display options from the 4K UHD 120 Hz Refresh Rate to 240Hz QHD display. And the fastest, FHD 360 Hz, IPS-Level display which is superb for high frames in games.
The ASUS laptop only has two display options. An excellent WQHD 165Hz/3ms with G-SYNC plus Advanced Optimus. Then there’s the more expensive 4K 120Hz/3ms with Adaptive-Sync. It’s worth noting, the ASUS QHD 165Hz display benefits from Advanced Optimus support. Allowing you to switch between the integrated and dedicated graphics. With direct connection between the Nvidia gpu and your internal display.
Cooling: MSI Vs ASUS ROG Laptops
If you’re new to laptop gaming. You must understand the importance of an adequate fan system for a longer lifespan and better gaming performance. These two models excel in that department, but who’s is better?
First stop, ASUS ROG. This laptop comes with an advanced thermal module with two powerful fans. Plus, the new and improved blade design, 4 heatsinks and 7 heat pipes. It also benefits from a 12mm intake behind the keyboard (rises at a 5° angle). This will help draw in cool air to pass through and help cool surface temps.
The Stealth GS76 utilizes MSI’s cool boost technology to ensure optimal thermal dissipation. They’ve increased the airflow by as much as 15% on last year’s (2020) model. Plus, it has 3 fans and 6 copper heat pipes to help further with cooling. And it’s known to have the world’s thinnest blade design, at 0.1mm thick.
We think, the ASUS ROG offers the better cooling because of the extra intake behind the keyboard. But, both laptops have everything in place to keep these gaming laptops cool throughout your gameplay and beyond.
Overall Which High-Performance Laptop is Best?
There are pros and cons to either laptop. But who would argue either the MSI or ASUS ROG gaming laptops are impressive gaming machines that would rival any other high-spec laptop. Including the latest HP Omen or Alienware laptops. Or even the best Razer gaming laptops.
Their designs are somewhat beautiful, simple, and elegant and they wouldn’t look out of place in a pro designers workplace either. Yet, one big difference is the ASUS Rog Zephyrus S17 comes with a higher-powered Nvidia RTX 30 series variant. This alone will affect gaming performance.
But the MSI machine gets the nod with its 99Whr battery. However, regarding RAM and storage. It is definitely equal because the ASUS ROG S17 laptop can carry more storage. But the MSI Stealth laptop can hold more RAM. So, it would depend on which is most important to you.
Overall, you won’t find many gamers who’d disagree these laptops would be gaming beasts. And if the MSI or ASUS gaming laptops above don’t clench your thirst, I’m not too sure what would.
MSI or ASUS Mid-Range Laptops, Which is Better?
For budget and mid-range laptops both MSI or ASUS have a wide range to choose from that will easily run the latest AAA games. But, you’ll find many more cheaper options manufactured by ASUS than MSI.
The release of Nvidia’s RTX 3050 and Ti budget cards bring ray tracing to laptops for under $1000. Students, newbies or content creators can experience what an RTX card on their gaming laptop has in store with these low-priced models starting from £800/$900. Both of these brands have those laptops.
You can also pick up and MSI or ASUS mid-range laptop with Nvidia RTX 20 series cards for a similar price. And still, enjoy DLSS and Ray Tracing in your favourite game titles. But it really depends on your specific needs and preferences as to which brand you choose. Some of the factors you may want to consider when making your decision include:
>The design and look of the laptop
>The port selection on the laptop (USB, HDMI, etc.)
>The weight and size of the laptop
>The performance of the laptop (does it meet your requirements?)
>The price tag of the laptop

MSI has a reputation for not replying to complaints swiftly, and their web presence can be overwhelming for some. However, MSI does have an online customer service forum where you can easily ask questions and find product-related info. Plus, Twitter tech support, but again not the best with response times.
On the plus side, MSI offers free tech support for the first year and will fix your laptop if you manage to damage it within that year. Which few other brands offer, but you will have to pay the shipping costs.
As for ASUS, they have a super web presence. Unlike MSI, where the wait times for a response can be up to three days. But with ASUS, you will most likely receive an answer to your query within the same day. Plus, their website is full of support features, which includes a global hotline and dedicated phone contact in almost every country.
