It is a little-known fact ASUS and MSI laptops are direct rivals, with 29% and 35% of the market share in RTX based laptops. But it was MSI laptops who had the largest growth in sales in 2020/1 even though ASUS won the award for the best laptop brand.

What was also clear was what made these companies so successful. That both brands clearly know the importance of customer satisfaction! This was also clear when before I compared ASUS vs Acer laptops. That time thou, an ASUS laptop got the nod over Acer on design and offered a broader range of Nvidia RTX 30 series laptops.

At first glance, MSI has a similar batch that could rival Acer and maybe many others. So, which laptops are better, MSI or ASUS laptop? Well, there is only one way to find out. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a quick look at their history.

ASUS VS MSI Brand History

MSI Vs ASUS: Brand History

ASUS was formed in the late eighties by several young Taiwanese engineers. Four of which had before worked for Acer. In the early days, things were not all that rosy for ASUS, suffering various design issues. At which point, Mr Shih, an engineer from Taiwan, took on the daunting task and swiftly got things back on track for ASUS.

In 2006, ASUS first dipped their feet into building laptops for gaming, and they also joined up with Gigabyte. The same year their sub-brand was born, the Republic of Gamers (ROG). And what is so impressive about ASUS, since their first notebooks in 2007 they have produced the world’s first on many products and won a staggering 4000+ awards for their troubles.

ASUS product line includes desktop PCs, monitors, Netbooks and smartphones, and they also have some of the best high-spec laptops on the planet, such as the ROG Zephyrus and ASUS Rog Strix laptops.

MSI History

MSI is another Taiwanese company founded by a group of young talented engineers who had before worked together but, in this case, at Sony. MSI gradually built a reputation for manufacturing motherboards and graphics cards.

MSI announced themselves onto the gaming notebook scene by releasing the X320 Laptop, the world’s lightest and slimmest 13-inch notebook.

By 2015, MSI became the world’s 5th best laptop brand, and by the end of 2016, they managed to outgun the lot and sell more of their MSI laptops than any other brand in the world.

When you have the likes of HP, Lenovo, and Acer to compete with, that’s no easy feat. And over those years, MSI has also won many awards for MSI laptops like the GS70 Stealth and the GT60 2PE Dominator PRO amongst many others.

MSI products include high-spec MSI laptops, motherboards, graphics cards, and PC gaming hardware, and all their hardware is always used by professional gamers and eSports teams around the globe due to its reliability.

MSI Vs Brand Overview

MSI is a Taiwanese multinational information technology company primarily a supplier of hardware components and laptops. MSI has also branched out into the mobile communications and consumer electronics markets.

However, MSI continually releases some of the best gaming laptops and mid range laptops on the market. And their recent range of NVidia RTX 30 series and AMD 6000 series laptops are no exception. Their most popular ones being the MSI Stealth GS series, Titan GT series, and the MSI Raider laptops.

MSI also have a range of unique Creator laptops and these are perfect for those who want to unleash all their other-worldly creations in one place. And they’re packed with the latest Intel 12th gen processors and NVidia RTX graphics.

ASUS vs MSI High Performance gaming laptops

MSI is not just limited to powerful laptops. They also offer a great collection of gaming gear, including keyboards, mice, monitors, and audio equipment. Meaning there will be no excuse for you not to complete your MSI setup in style, and clearly, there isn’t much this brand cannot do.

Design & Build Materials

MSI laptops are available in a range of designs, so you can choose the best design that is best for you. However, some of their designs can seem quite bland and simple with all-black finishes, like the MSI Stealth laptops. And, others like the MSI Raider laptops have unique RGB strips around the edges.

Other MSI mid range laptops like the MSI Crosshair 15’s are something else, and if you’re a big fan of bright yellow or the action-packed shooter, Rainbow Six Siege, then these mid range MSI laptops might be for you.

Check out the video below by Jarrod’s Tech outlining the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding one of the newer MSI laptops, the MSI Crosshair all yellow laptop, and this way you can make your own mind up.

Regarding the build, most, if not all, MSI laptops use a process called CNC (computer numerical control). This manufacturing process ensures tight build tolerances and a high-quality finish that is durable and strong.

In terms of materials used, MSI laptops predominantly use brushed aluminium, and most gaming laptops use plastic. However, it is this sort of material that gives MSI laptops a premium feel and look, the only downside to this is that it does make them susceptible to fingerprints and scratches.

Price – Value for money

MSI has gaming laptops for just about any budget. However, MSI’s high-end laptops are definitely on the more expensive side and especially their new releases. You should expect to pay upwards of $3000 for one of the more powerful MSI laptops.

However, these would be packed with up to the latest NVidia RTX 3080 Ti GPUs and these prices are in line with other quality gaming laptop brands. I mean, if you compare MSI’s top-of-the-line gaming laptops with the likes of Razer and their gaming laptops you’ll find their prices are similar, and some are less expensive.

But unlike Razer, who don’t do budget gaming laptops. MSI has some great mid-range laptops but also budget options like the MSI GF63’s, and their prices can be as low as $800 with NVidia GTX graphics and Intel i5 processors.

These budget laptops will run most games, albeit on low settings. And you can often find great deals on some of their older models. So if an MSI laptop is for you, it would be worth shopping around before making any final decisions.

MSI vs Components

MSI has the complete line-up of laptop hardware available, so whether you want top-of-the-line performance or something more budget-friendly, there is likely some great MSI laptops to suit your needs.

First off, MSI uses the latest 12th gen Intel 14-Core processors in all their high-spec laptops. Plus, they have laptops with Intel Core i9 CPUs too and these are great options if you do more than just gaming, like streaming while gaming, or video editing.

The same goes for their NVidia RTX graphics cards. MSI has up to the latest NVidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPUs, and they also have older and more budget-friendly graphics, like the GTX 10 and 16 series.

Another great thing about choosing MSI, is that they are one of only a few laptop brands that share the details regarding which NVidia RTX variant you will get in your machine. (TGP – Total Graphics Power). Which does affect gaming performance.

Additionally, MSI also uses the latest DDR5 memory type in their high-spec laptops. But may not be the case on lesser models, with some still using DDR4 RAM. But most of their laptops can take up to 64GB RAM, whereas other brands will max out at 16GB or 32GB. Again, this is another reason MSI laptops are more suited for content creators, streamers, and gaming enthusiasts.

MSI Features

Loads of features stand out with most MSI laptops, so we will list the ones that the latest MSI Stealth has to offer and see what sets these high-spec gaming laptops apart from ASUS or any other gaming brand.

Clearly, these are amazing and powerful gaming laptops that would be perfect for both hardcore and casual gamers. This bad boy packs up to an Intel 14-Core i9 processor, and with options up to NVidia RTX 3080 Ti graphic card, you can game all day without worrying about any slowdowns.

They also come with Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, so you can enjoy the very best gaming has to offer. And if that’s not enough, another feature that is great for gamers is the Cherry MX speed switch on these impressive SteelSeries keyboards. And this makes it possible to click much faster, and the per-key RGB lighting will let you customise your gameplay just the way you like it.

Other features include a larger than average 99 Whr battery accompanied by a 230W adaptor, so you will worry less about running out of power while on your travels. In addition, to the new and improved Cooler Boost 5 cooling technology, plus a webcam shutter that’s seated in front of an impressive 1080p full HD IPS camera.

It would be hard for ASUS to match this one, but we’ll see.

Main Features

  • 99 Battery (Whr) + 230 W AC Adaptor
  • SteelSeries Per-Key RGB Keyboards
  • Keyboards Cherry MX Speed Switch
  • Up to 1080p FHD Camera’s

MSI Customer Support

MSI has a reputation for not replying to complaints swiftly, and their web presence can be overwhelming for some. However, MSI does have an online customer service forum where you can easily ask questions and find product-related info. MSI also offers Twitter tech support, but again not the best with response times.

On the plus side, MSI offers free technical support for the first year and will fix your laptop if you manage to accidently damage it. This is something few other brands offer, but you will have to pay for shipping.

During our test, most of the questions we asked were answered within the same day, however, there were some that we didn’t get the answer we wanted. All that aside, the MSI team was friendly and will do what they can to get you back up and running.

So if you’re looking to buy an MSI laptop, you need to know the customer service is ok, and MSI would be a wise enough choice. Just note you may find yourself searching through the forums from time to time.

ASUS Brand Overview

ASUS is another Taiwanese technology company that has a wide range of products. These include desktops, tablets, smartphones, monitors and other peripherals and accessories. ASUS is also well-known for its great business laptops.

However, ASUS is better known for its gaming laptops, and they offer a superb range of different laptops to appeal to all types of gamers. These include some of the best gaming laptops out there, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus and Strix laptops, to name a few.

And like MSI, they pack in all the latest Intel 12th Gen and AMD 6000 series processors and NVidia RTX 30 series and AMD 6000 series graphics. ASUS are also great at producing the world’s first, which they’ve done on many products.

The ASUS Flow X13 is one of those products, and if you didn’t know, the Flow X13 is a convertible gaming laptop that is powerful enough to play the latest games and has won numerous awards across the board.#

ASUS also have laptops for other uses besides gaming, and the ASUS ProArt StudioBook and the ASUS ZenBook Pro are perfect examples. These are superb creator or business laptops and would be perfect for content creators and other professionals. And they would easily give other brands a run for their money.

ASUS Laptop Design & Build

There’s no doubt that MSI vs ASUS gaming laptops are quite something. ASUS have their Republic of Gamers (ROG) line, which is especially popular among gamers for its combination of power, performance, and style.

ASUS laptops are built with high-grade materials and have cutting-edge designs that make them stand out from the competition. Unlike with MSI, there are not really any funky colours, and for the most part, they’re mostly all black except one or two.

The ASUS Strix range of laptops is a great example of this, and the latest models have an Aura powered RGB LED lighting strip around the front edge and offer countless colours and pattern options to light up any room, including yours.

But there is one ASUS laptop that really stands out from the crowd, and that is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16. This model has an unbelievable and unique design and even won an Honouree award at CES 2022.

It comes with a dual integrated display and packs in the latest high-end components. What is also great is when you open the lid, the second display rises and slides towards the main display. Thus, creating a seamless gaming experience and when this happens, it also opens the ventilation system to increase its cooling efficiency even further.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 Gaming Laptop

One of the best things about ASUS laptops is that they’re not just for gamers because they also make great laptops for content creators and other professionals who are looking for powerful business laptops.

The ASUS ProArt StudioBook is a great example of this, these have beautiful designs and they’re specifically designed for content creators who need loads of processing power and laptops that can handle resource-hungry programmes.

ASUS Laptop Price – Value for money

ASUS are often considered to be one of the more expensive laptop brands on this market. But that does not mean all ASUS laptops are overpriced! In fact, there are a good few choices out there that offer great value for money, the ASUS Tuf range springs to mind.

These ASUS laptops are quite similar to MSI’s GF63 laptop range with prices starting in and around the $700-$800 price bracket. And yes, the ASUS Strix and Zephyrus gaming laptops will cost a pretty penny, but they will be well worth the investment.

Besides, they’re priced similar to most gaming laptops brands, brands such as Alienware and Razer. Yet, those two tend not to jump on the entry level gaming laptop bandwagon like ASUS or MSI do.

You should expect to pay between $2000-$3000 for a relatively high-spec ASUS gaming laptop. But you can often pick up slightly less powerful ones for around $1200-$1500, still packed with RTX 30 series GPUs and speedy gaming processors.

ASUS Laptop Components

When comparing ASUS vs MSI gaming brands we found that they’re similar, in the fact that they both have gaming laptops incorporating the full line-up of powerful hardware. Including the latest 12th Gen Intel Core i7 and i9 processors together with the latest NVidia RTX 30 series GPUs.

ASUS also have gaming laptops with some of the fastest AMD processor available, including the AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX. MSI doesn’t seem to have those. So, if an AMD laptop is your preferred option, then ASUS would be the best choice.

However, expect to pay a small fortune for this type of laptop, around $4500. But if you’re serious about gaming and want the best possible gaming performance, then this is the price you would have to pay.

ASUS also have a great range of laptops with budget hardware like the NVIDIA RTX 3060, 3050 Ti, and RTX 3050s. Plus, ASUS is another brand that happily shares the details regarding which NVidia RTX variant you will get in your machine.

They also use the latest DDR5 memory type and some of their laptops that can take up to 64GB RAM. Overall, when you compare the hardware in MSI vs ASUS gaming laptops, there isn’t much difference.

Both brands having a range of high-end laptops and an entry level gaming laptop range as well. ASUS does have a slight edge over MSI in that they have more laptops with the latest AMD Ryzen processors.

The ASUS Strix and Zephyrus are powerful gaming machines with amazing specs, featuring all the latest Intel and AMD processors, NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti 16GB graphics, and loads of speedy NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD storage.

Other features include superior displays, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, and the latest Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. ASUS gaming laptops also feature Aura Sync Lighting and will offer endless colour and pattern options.

Aura Sync even gives you the ability to link the effects to your favourite music and games. This software is similar to Razer Chroma that you’ll get with the latest Razer Blade laptops and offers cool effects that can be personalised to your own individual tastes.

Additionally, ASUS laptops also feature Optomechanical Keyboards that will offer faster and more accurate keypresses than traditional membrane keyboards. Not just that, they will typically last longer because they have durable mechanical switches.

However, there are some features where MSI is slightly better, like their 99 Whr batteries compared to ASUS 90 Whr and better cameras but others make ASUS slightly better but these differences are few and far between.

So, if you’re looking for a great gaming laptop with some superb features, weather that be an entry level gaming laptop or high-spec then ASUS is the brand for you. They’re great range of laptops also have some of the best cooling systems on the market.

Main Features

  • 90 Battery (Whr) + 200 W AC Adaptor
  • Aura Powered RGB LED lighting Effects
  • Optomechanical – Backlit Chiclet Per-Key RGB
  • Nebula HDR Displays – FreeSync Premium
  • Intel 14-Core i9 & AMD R9 Processors

ASUS Customer Support

We found that ASUS offers a good customer service experience, with quick response times and knowledgeable staff. They also have a web presence that is easy to navigate and find help.

The ASUS website is packed full of easy to follow articles and guides. Another great thing is if you create an ASUS account, you will get “5GB Free” cloud storage that you can use when and wherever you like.

As for their warranties, most ASUS laptops come with a one-year warranty, including accidental damage and free two-way shipping for repairs. Unlike MSI, where you have to pay to return their products for repair.
