An NVIDIA 3000 series laptop is the latest and, by far, the greatest thing since sliced bread for mobile gamers. It doesn’t seem that long ago since NVIDIA introduced Ray-Tracing to our favourite game titles.
Over the last year, I have had so much fun gaming with my HP Omen 15 . And as the old saying goes, how time flies when you are having fun. Well, it certainly has for me.
But like many other laptop gamers, my focus is on researching the best Nvidia RTX 30 series laptop. Trying to find the best one for me and my gaming.
Although, up until recently, I was under the impression, the RTX 3000 series laptop GPUs were split into three categories. RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080.
Until I read there are actually 28 different configurations for the RTX 3000 series graphics cards. That’s right, 28, and possibly even more.
So what does this mean?
For starters, it doesn’t make it easy to buy a gaming laptop with an RTX 30 series GPU. Because, how can you be sure which configuration is paired with the laptop?
So In this post, I will explain why there are 28 RTX 3000 series mobile GPUs. I will also try to de-syphon some of the jargon surrounding an Nvidia Ampere RTX chip.

28 Different NVidia 3000 Series Laptop Configurations?
Like I have said before, I have had so much fun with my HP Omen laptop that pairs an RTX 2060 with a Ryzen 7 4000 series mobile processor.
But the time has come to upgrade and grab a shiny new toy. Unfortunately, unlike gaming PCs, laptops are a little tricky, if not impossible, to upgrade.
And the graphics card is one of those components most certainly on the impossible list.
But, if you are prepared to invest a small fortune to get the latest and greatest in laptop gaming. Then you, like me, should be looking to buy an Nvidia RTX 3000 series laptop.
If my HP Omen is anything to go by, I know I’m in for a real treat.
But when I was researching to find the best NVidia 3000 series laptop, I stumbled across a few details regarding the available configurations.
And finding out there are more configurations to this chip than I first thought was not taken lightly.
It was then I realised just how difficult this would make buying the best RTX 3000 series laptop.
How the hell are you gonna know the performance of the GPU. Without first getting the laptop home for testing. There would be no way of even making an educated guess on the performance of the graphics if you don’t know the finer details.
A simple solution would be for all manufactures/sellers of a new RTX 3000 series laptop to list the exact power consumption and boost clock speeds of the Ampere GPU that’s inside each gaming laptop.
How the RTX Mobile GPUs are Split
Previously, I was under the impression the RTX 30 series mobile GPUs were split into three categories. Nvidia RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 mobile discrete graphics chips.
While this may be the case for the most part, to my surprise, there are actually 28 different configurations and possibly more. As a buyer, this would make finding the best RTX 3000 series laptop quite tricky?
What I mean is, if you were to purchase an RTX 3060 gaming machine. You could potentially take home a gaming laptop with one of eleven different RTX 3060 Ampere laptop GPUs. With a TGP ranging from 60 to 115 with a possible boost of between 5 – 15 watts.
The same can be said for an RTX 3080, also with 11 variants. But, the total graphics power range is higher, between 80 to 150, plus a possible boost between 5 – 15 watts.
Whereas gaming laptops paired with an RTX 3070 NVidia Ampere GPU, there are only six different configurations. In my book, as a buyer, that’s 25 configurations is too many.
In addition, each variant has three GPUs with Max-Q technology. Unlike with the RTX 20 series mobile chips, many manufacturers are not mentioning these details in the product listing.
Note: Nvidia GPUs with Max-Q have lower power consumption and are equipped with less memory.
For your information, the Ampere RTX 30 series mobile GPUs are split into configurations for clock speed and total graphics power. You will find tables with the exact configurations for each variant further down this page.

Why So Many 3000 Series Laptop GPU Configurations?
As reported, gaming laptop OEM’s receive a long list of options for their RTX 3000 series laptop GPUs. And, this is so they can then set the power consumption and clock speeds to suit the laptop cooling.
Unless these sellers list the fine details on their product pages we have no way of knowing the max TGP or the max clock speeds of each gaming laptop, therefore, you could purchase a laptop paired with an RTX 3070 thinking, the GPU is more powerful than an RTX 3060.
As you can see from the tables above there several RTX 3060 GPUs with a higher TGP than some of the RTX 3070 graphics cards. And, that could mean an RTX 3060 laptop could possibly outperform an RTX 3070 laptop.
At present the only details we see is whether the laptop is paired with an RTX 3060, 3070, or an RTX 3080 mobile graphics card and for the most part, the fine details are missing.
Having said all that, German tech giant Computer Base reported, NVidia instructed manufactures to display more details regarding the power consumption and clock speeds of their Ampere RTX 3000 series graphics processing units.
Several manufactures have started to include these details on their product pages, in turn, this will help me and you make an educated purchase, without waiting on reviewers opinions.
Where will I find the Best RTX 3000 Series Laptops?
Part of my research for this post was to visit several well-known gaming laptop sellers. To see what details are being displayed regarding the RTX 3000 series GPU configurations.
For those who don’t display the content, I intend to contact them for comment. And the replies I receive, I will leave below for your information.
And, when I receive updated information from the manufactures I intend to update the details on this page. Which will help you make the best purchasing decision for your Nvidia RTX 3000 series laptop.

RTX 3000 Series Mobile Graphics Cards: Do you know?
An Nvidia RTX 3000 series mobile graphics card is complex. It would take more than a few hundred words to explain in detail, therefore, I will only cover a small fraction of what could be covered.
RTX 30 series GPUs were released at the back end of 2020, and they are the latest and by far the greatest edition to the gaming graphics family.
Nvidia has really pushed the envelope when it comes to gaming laptops. Amazingly, much higher frames, better quality images and overall better performance.
The RTX 30 series laptops superseded the RTX 20 series, which was the first generation of real-time hardware with Ray Tracing, based on the Turing Architecture. The world’s most advanced GPU architecture.
Furthermore, the RTX 20 series were also the first to include dedicated RT cores and Tensor cores. And, in gaming terms, we experienced huge jumps in game realism, speed, and even bigger steps in power efficiency that resulted in extremely higher frame rates.
When the RTX 3000 series laptops were released our experiences were heightened even further, and, they featured new Ray Tracing cores. More Tensor Cores and new Streaming multiprocessors.
Unlike the RTX 20 series, these are powered by the Ampere architecture and featured 2nd gen RT Cores and 3rd Gen Tensor Cores which resulted in stunning visuals and amazingly fast frames rates and artificial intelligence acceleration in our games.
And also offering high-fidelity gaming at all resolutions, even up to 8K.
What is Ray Tracing?
Ray Tracing is by no means a new science. It dates back to the 1960’s, but never materialised because computers at that time were not powerful enough.
In short, Ray Tracing is a rendering process in which rays are used to determine the visibility of various elements of the scene. By following light rays and calculating the colour of the pixels by tracing the path the light would take from the eye of the gamer and then through the virtual scene.
As it moves through the scene the light reflects from one object to another, or it may travel through the surfaces of transparent objects before reaching a light source causing reflections and shadows. It is these interactions that produce the colour of the pixels displayed on the laptop display.
The introduction of RT cores to act as the accelerator make RTX GPUs up to 10x faster allowing ray tracing to be possible. Bringing realistic lighting and shadows and enhanced image quality to our favourite game titles.
What Are RT Cores?
RT Cores are the core component of real-time rendering, a technique that results in realistic light reflections and cinematic like effects.
An RT Core is a tiny piece of hardware attached to the graphics chip that allowed ray tracing to become possible in today’s real-time games and applications.
And paired together with new streaming multiprocessors are critical to delivering the performance needed to run the latest high-fidelity real-time raytracing experiences at higher resolutions.
What Are Tensor Cores?
NVidia’s Turing Architecture also features Tensor cores, that bring artificial intelligence to gaming laptops and PC’s. Tensor cores are processors that can provide up to 500 trillion operations per second.
They are the brains behind dramatically improving performance and bring AI capabilities to our RTX gaming laptops. AI-enhanced features such as denoising and resolution scaling.
Tensor Cores also allow for new techniques like DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, which is now possible on RTX graphics cards. Improving performance and imagery further.
DLSS is able to extract multidimensional features of the rendered scene and combine that with multiple frames to deliver high-quality images and also delivering a performance boost.
Furthermore, DLSS uses less energy and will handle complex scenes much better than older techniques like TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing) which used a lot of energy to create the final image.
What is Dynamic Boost 2.0.?
Nvidia introduced the Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology to help improve the performance of the CPU and GPU in the latest gaming laptops. Nvidia states you will witness in the region of a 12% performance boost in the latest game titles.
DB 2.0 is only available with an Nvidia RTX 3000 series laptop. But the buck stops with the manufacturers who decide whether to include this free technology in their laptop range, or not.
Dynamic Boost 2.0 is part of Nvidia’s 3rd generation Max-Q technologies and aimed towards delivering higher performance in thinner and lighter mobile gaming machines and will work seamlessly with either an AMD or an Intel mobile processor.
How DB 2.0 works?
Dynamic Boost 2.0 will dynamically adjust the thermal management inside the laptop and deliver the needed power between your CPU and GPU. And you could see as much as 15 watts added to the GPU.
But, unlike the first generation of DB, which was only one-way traffic. With DB 2.0, it works both ways; both the CPU and GPU can borrow power when needed from each other. Whereas the 1st Gen Dynamic Boost would only allow the GPU to borrow thermal power from the CPU and not the other way round.
With the DB 2.0 tech, manufacturers can keep the laptop cooling capacity thermal design power above the CPU and GPU alone, but less than them both together. Saving them having to add additional heat pipes, or fans. In turn, saving precious space.
And this would allow manufactures to keep gaming laptops as thin and as light as reasonably possible. But also ensuring they are powerful enough to handle high-fidelity gaming.
