I’ve relied on the manufacturer’s websites to obtain the weight information. 

This comprehensive approach ensures you receive the most relevant and up-to-date information when looking for a new laptop. My goal is to help you make a better informed decision when purchasing your next laptop computer. Without further ado, let’s dive in.

How Heavy Should A Laptop Be?

The ideal weight of a laptop depends upon an individual’s specific requirements. Some users prioritize portability, opting for lightweight laptops. While others focus on performance and don’t mind a heavier device like a gaming laptop. Consider your intended use and travel plans to determine the suitable weight range of a computer, ensuring it meets your needs.

What Are Considered Lightweight Laptops

Typical laptops weighing less than 3 pounds (1.36 kilograms) are generally considered in the lightweight laptops categories and they usually have a screen size of 11 to 14 inches and are ideal for users who prioritize portability over performance.

The lightest laptops, also known as ultraportable laptops that we found from our research are the Microsoft Surface Go 3 (1.20 lbs or 0.54kg) and the Acer Swift 3 laptops (2.65 lbs or 1.2kg). These are ideal for users who travel with their devices.

What Are Considered Heavy Laptops

Heavy laptops typically weigh more than 6 pounds (2.72 kilograms) and are characterized by their bigger screen, with large screens from 15 inches to 17-inches or more. These devices are suitable for users who require powerful performance, and advanced graphics cards.

Some heavier laptops are also known as desktop replacement laptops like the Dell Alienware x17 or the Razer Blade 17 or the newer Razer Blade 18-inch gaming laptop. Expensive, yes, but are well worth their higher price tag if you need that extra performance.

What Makes A Laptop Heavy?

Several factors contribute to a laptop’s weight, including the battery, screen size, cooling system, and hardware components. High-performance gaming laptops often feature more robust components. Such as advanced thermal systems, resulting in a heavier overall weight.

If your laptops feels excessively heavy, it could be due to it housing these features. Moreover, a laptop with a larger screen size or a rugged design could also contribute to increased weight. Yet, these are essential elements for some users who prioritize performance.

What Is The Average Weight Of A Laptop?

The average weight of a laptop ranges between 3 and 6 pounds (1.36 to 2.72 kilograms). This weight bracket accommodates a wide variety of laptop sizes and specifications, allowing users to choose a device that best suits their needs.

We examined the weight of over 70 different laptops from various brands and found the average weight of these laptops to be 4.62 lbs (2.09 kg). Microsoft offers the lightest laptops, while MSI and Razer have laptops with the heaviest average overall weight. Notably, Dell Alienware has the heaviest laptop on this list at 8.90lbs (4.04 kg).

The weight of a laptop varies depending on its features and size. However, most laptops weigh between 3 and 6 pounds (1.36 to 2.72 kilograms), with some lightweight laptops falling below this range and heavier laptops, such as gaming laptops exceeding it.

The types of laptops that would be beneficial include the Apple MacBook Air, Lenovo Ideapad Slim 7, and the HP Pavilion Plus 14, these are some of the best ultra-thin laptops you might want to consider. However, regular laptops such as the Acer Aspire and the HP EliteBook are also worthy contenders for their sleek design and powerful hardware specs. 

For those who mainly use their laptop in one location can opt for a heavier model with more features. And, if you want full computing power and don’t mind carrying around a slightly bulky device, look for a medium-weight laptop such as the Dell XPS or the Apple MacBook Pro. 

How Heavy Are Gaming Laptops?

Gaming laptops are generally heavier than average laptop computers, with weights typically ranging between 5 and 8 pounds (2.26 to 3.60 kg). Based on all the models listed above, the average weight of a gaming laptop is 5.55 pounds (2.49 kg).
