Solidworks Recommended Laptop Requirements?

In order for you to run Solidworks efficiently on your laptop, you need to have enough power to satisfy or exceed the system requirements. If the laptop computer does not meet these requirements, you may experience lag time or even crashes which is not good.

If the laptop does not meet the system requirements it can cause delays and even jeopardise your chances of meeting tight deadlines with your Solidworks projects. It is highly recommended that you purchase a laptop that is both powerful and compatible with this design software.

What to Consider When Choosing Solidworks Laptop?

The graphic card is one of the most critical components to consider when choosing a laptop for Solidworks. Having a powerful graphics card will allow you to run more complex models and large assemblies must faster and smoother.

The most suitable graphics card would be the NVidia Quadro graphics. These professional GPUs are much better when working with software like Solidworks than GPUs designed for gaming.

Quadro graphics will provide significantly improved results when working on complex designs compared to consumer graphics cards. Quadro graphics cards offer enhanced graphics performance mode. With consumer GPUs, you’re more likely to experience lag and stutter when working on complex projects.

Solidworks doesn’t recommend graphics cards designed for “gaming” or multimedia applications, such as NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon. These cards do not offer maximum performance or stability for Solidworks. However, some operations may be possible if you’re willing to experiment with the settings on your machine.

Some examples of suitable graphics cards that are ideal for Solidworks laptops are listed below. I have split into three categories. Graphics cards for general tasks, large assemblies, and complex parts.

General assemblies:

  • At least: NVidia Quadro T2000

Large assemblies with basic parts:

  • NVidia Quadro RTX 3000
  • NVidia Quadro RTX 4000

Large assemblies with complex parts:

  • NVidia Quadro RTX 5000
  • NVidia Quadro RTX 6000

Solidworks Visualize 2022:

  • NVidia Quadro RTX 5000/6000
  • NVidia RTX A4000+

The Recommended Processors for Solidworks?

When choosing the processor for a Solidworks laptop, the clock speed is most important. The processor must have a base clock speed of at least 3.3 GHz, but higher is better. Moreover, the good thing is that Solidworks supports both Intel and AMD processors. And even though Solidworks is single-thread dependent, you must make sure you choose a processor with at least 4 CPU Cores.

Intel Xeon processors would be the best option because they support ECC (Error Correcting Code) RAM but would also be the most expensive option. However, an Intel Core i7 or an AMD Ryzen 7 processor would also be good options for running Solidworks, especially for beginners.

Intel’s new 12th Gen CPUs would be the better option because they have new efficient cores. So this means the E-Cores (efficient cores) will handle multithreading tasks and any background processors you have running. While the other CPU cores will focus on your Solidworks projects and this will lead to a much smoother experience.

How Much Memory?

How much RAM you need is next on the agender. For Solidworks, 8GB RAM would be enough for things like rotating models, renders and shorter simulations. But you will also need to consider what other programmes will use memory like the OS, browsers etc. So, 16GB of RAM would be best to run Solidworks and more than enough RAM for most users.

However, if you plan on doing some serious 3D modelling or running long simulations, you may want to consider 32GB of RAM or even as much as 64GBs. The good thing is that the most suitable laptops for Solidworks will have the capacity to increase the RAM.

And that’s it! Now you know what to look for in a laptop for Solidworks, next see my top picks. I have scoured the web to find the best options for price, performance, and suitability to master all the Solidworks software brings and ensure your projects are completed on time.

Solidworks Laptop Buying Guide

When choosing a laptop for Saladworks careful consideration is required. The Solidworks CAD system is very demanding so you will need a fast processor, graphics card, plenty of RAM, a sizable SSD storage. Here are a few things to consider.

CPU – Processor speed

The CPU will determine how fast you can perform tasks like rotating models or highlighting faces in 3D CAD software like Solidworks. When dealing with large assemblies, this factor becomes even more important. Therefore, a CPU with a high operating frequency and clock speeds at 3.3GHz or above.

Due to the fact Solidworks is mostly single core dependent, but some Solidworks products, like Solidworks simulation, will take advantage of extra processor cores. To help improve rendering times, and not just for Solidworks but other heavy-duty tasks like video editing, and music production.

RAM – Memory Capacity

Solidworks will need at least 8GB of RAM for simulations, rotating models, and rendering. But it is best to have at least 16GB of RAM, if you want to run long simulation tasks within Solidworks.

Moreover, ECC RAM is best. (ECC stands for error-correcting code). ECC RAM will help protect your system from shutting down by automatically correcting data errors that may occur.

Assembly sizeUnder 500MB500MB to 1.25GB1.25GB to 3GB
Minimum RAM capacity16GB RAM 32GB RAM64GB RAM

GPU – Graphics Card

When using Solidworks the GPU is fundamental to your productivity because the GPU assists the processor with accelerated operations such as zooming and rotating. The graphics card must have a high memory bandwidth to show all of the features in an assembly with good performance.

Nvidia Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro GPU with at least 8 GB of memory, preferably 16 GB are best. Apart from the Razer Blade 15 laptop, all the laptops I recommend come with certified GPUs for Solidworks. You may come across older graphics cards that are still capable of running Solidworks. Below, I’ve listed the ones still supported by SOLIDWORKS but are no longer certified with newer releases.

Storage – SSD or Hard Drives

When it comes to large Solidworks projects and files, you need a fast and reliable storage. SSDs are much faster than conventional hard disk drives at transferring data. SSDs also consume less power and produce less heat which can lead to a longer life for your laptop battery and other components.

The main reason why SSDs work so well with CAD software is due to the amount of time you spend accessing files. Hard Disk Drives can take about 10-20 milliseconds to rotate and position themselves where they need to be. This time can add up when working in Solidworks.

The good news is that most new laptops will come with SSDs. Some will have spare bays, called M.2 drives, so you can add a second SSD to further improve your laptops responsiveness.

Solidworks Laptops – FAQS

1. Are gaming laptops good for Solidworks?

Most gaming laptops are not powerful enough to run Solidworks. They have consumer GPUs that are not certified for Solidworks. However, you can still work on small assemblies with fewer parts and some more complex models.

2. Which type of Graphics Cards is suitable for Solidworks?

The most suitable graphics cards for Solidworks are Certified Professional graphics cards. Like NVidia Quadro or NVidia RTX, A series and AMD Radeon Pro graphics cards. These cards are designed specifically for programmes such as Solidworks.

3. How much RAM would I need for Solidworks?

For Solidworks, you will want as much RAM as you can possibly afford. However, 8GB would be the bare minimum for small to medium assemblies. If you’re working on assemblies larger than 500MB and up to 1.5GB, then 32GB RAM would be best.

4. What is the best laptop processor for Solidworks?

The best laptop processor for Solidworks would be an Intel Xeon processor because they feature ECC memory. Just make the processor has a high clock speed (above 3.3GHz). This will help enhance performance and overall system speed.

Can Solidworks run on any laptop?

Solidworks can run on any laptop that meets the minimum system requirements. The minimum system requirements are 8GB RAM, a processor with at least 4 Cores and a 3.3GHz clock speed. A dedicated graphics card with 8GB VRAM. Lastly, the laptop would need at least a 512GB SSD.

When shopping around for the best laptops for Solidworks, you need to ensure it has a fast processor with a high-clock rate. A powerful graphics card, plenty of SSD storage space and RAM. You also want a laptop that will last a long time like Razer’s do and will withstand the rigours of everyday use.
