CPU – Processor speed

The CPU you choose will determine how fast you can perform tasks like rotating models or highlighting faces in 3D CAD software like Solidworks. And, when dealing with large assemblies, this factor becomes even more important. It would be best to have ECC RAM. (ECC stands for error-correcting code). ECC RAM will help protect your system from shutting down by automatically correcting data errors that may occur. This type of RAM is only possible with an Intel Xeon processor.

You need about 5GB of RAM for Solidworks, then at least 20 times the largest assembly size you work with. So if your assemblies are all about 200MB in size, you would need 5GB + 20x.2 which works out about 9GB of RAM minimum. GPU – Graphics Card

For Solidworks, you must understand that the GPU is fundamental to your productivity because they assist the processor with accelerated operations such as zooming and rotating. And for the graphics card to show all of the features in an assembly with good performance, it must have a high memory bandwidth. 

So it is recommended that you use an Nvidia Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro GPU with at least 8 GB of memory, preferably 16 GB. The good thing, both NVidia Quadro and AMD Radeon Pro cards have a large user base, meaning there will be plenty of resources available if you run into problems later on down the line. 

However, cards such as GeForce and Radeon (non-Pro) are not the best for Solidworks. These are consumer-level cards and may give poor performance and stability. But you can still run Solidworks with these, but there are some significant performance advantages to using professional workstation graphics.

Solidworks can handle enormous assemblies with ease. However, when it comes to large files, one must focus on getting a fast and reliable storage system. We recommend SSDs all day long, as they are much faster than conventional hard disk drives. SSDs also consume less power and produce less heat. And this can lead to a longer life for your laptop battery and other components.

The main reason why SSDs work so well with CAD software is due to the amount of time you spend accessing files. Hard Disk Drives can take about 10-20 milliseconds to rotate and position themselves where they need to be. And this time can add up when working in Solidworks.

The good news is that most new laptops will come with an SSD. Some will have spare bays, often called M.2 drives, and these are great as you can easily add a second SSD.
