What are the best gaming laptops under 800?

Below you will find the best gaming laptops under 800. Each laptop listed features at least 8GB RAM, which is the perfect starting point for gaming. A laptop with 4GB is no good in this day and age, most decent games require at least 8GB, with some requiring 12GB like COD Warzone. But 8GB is ok to start with.

They should also have discrete Nvidia GPUs and if you didn’t know, a discrete GPU is a standalone graphics card (separate from the CPU) that has its own memory and cooling. Unlike integrated graphics.

Integrated graphics sit on the same chip as the CPU, which means its graphics processing power is limited. And I wouldn’t expect to pay anymore than £500 for a budget laptop with integrated graphics and most definitely not £800. But if you do decide a cheaper budget laptop would be best, expect the games you can play to be limited.

A budget laptop under 800 should have an SSD, at least 512GB as well as a little room to upgrade. On top of that, they should offer a 120Hz display, although there are a few budget options with 60Hz panels which is still ok, you just won’t be able to keep up in demanding game titles.

Finally, look for a laptop with a USB Type-C port, you will need it if you plan to master some external monitor gameplay, not all budget laptops will have these. And it’s not the end of the world if you can’t find one.

1. ASUS TUF Dash 15 Ultra Slim Gaming Laptop

Specifications – Processor: Intel Core i7-11370H, MB: 4.8 GHz; Display size: 15.6in 144Hz FHD; RAM: 8GB DDR4 (MAX 16GB); Display resolution: 1920 x 1080px; GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti 4GB; Storage: 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD; Weight: 2.0kg; Operating System: Windows 10

ASUS have the full line-up of high performance, mid-range, and budget gaming machines. The ASUS TUF Dash 15 is one of the more impressive budget laptops. It is ultra slim (19mm thick), light, and sleek. Pairing one of the new RTX 3050-Ti 4GB mobile graphics cards that brings ray-tracing and DLSS to budget gaming.

This model pairs the new H series Intel 11th Gen 4 core processor and runs up to 4.80GHz together with 8GB DDR4-3200 RAM maxed out at 32GB, and a speedy 512GB NVMe SSD.

The 144Hz IPS-Type FHD display is the most impressive part of all that comes with adaptive sync that will help eliminate tearing and stuttering in game.

With the ASUS Tuf 15 laptop you should enjoy respectable fps on high settings, and match the refresh rate of the display in low. Although, this laptop is slightly over budget but if you want an affordable high-performing laptop nothing on this page beats this one.

2. MSI GF63 Thin 15.6″ Gaming Laptop

Specifications – Processor: Intel Core i5-10300H, MB: 4.10 GHz; Display size: 15.6in 60Hz FHD; RAM: 8GB DDR4 (MAX 64GB); Display resolution: 1920 x 1080px; GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650-ti 4GB; Storage: 256GB NVMe SSD; Weight: 3.46kg; Operating System: Windows 10

MSI has many gorgeous portable options, and the new high-spec MSI Stealth laptop is something to be reckoned with. But today, we are only interested in the best budget gaming laptop under 800.

The MSI GF63 is one of them, and it pairs an Intel 10th Gen 4 core CPU that runs between 2.5Ghz and 4.5GHz with an Nvidia GTX 1650-Ti GPU so not the fastest from Nvidia but you should be able to maintain 60fps on medium settings. Though, this laptop only has an entry level 60Hz display so that’s something to think about.

The components are concluded by 8GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM and a 256 SSD, which is not very much (storage) but there is space to add a further storage solution and additional RAM.

What’s more, the MF63 does have a full-size single RGB backlit keyboard that includes a number pad. There is also a plethora of ports including USB-Type C for fast data transfer and Wi-Fi 6 to ensure the best internet connection. The 48WHr 3-cell lithium-ion battery isn’t bad either, offering three to fours hours of run time.

Overall, the MSI GF63 is not the slimmest or lightest but that’s not to say it’s not one of the best gaming laptops under 800. In terms of performance, this laptop should match many others at this price point. It’s just a shame it doesn’t come with more storage.

Undecided? We compared MSI Vs ASUS Laptops

3. Lenovo Ideapad L340 15.6 Gaming Laptop

Specifications – Processor: Intel Core i5-9300H, MB: 4.10 GHz; Display size: 15.6in 60Hz FHD; RAM: 8GB DDR4 (MAX 32GB); Display resolution: 1920 x 1080px; GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB; Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD; Weight: 2.19kg; Operating System: Windows 10

Next up, a decent budget gaming laptop under 750. The Lenovo Ideapad is another Nvidia GTX 16 series gaming machine that has two distinctive modes. With the flick of a button, you have “Quiet-Mode” for working or just chilling and “Quick-Mode” for gaming which is helpful.

It pairs an Intel i5 9th Gen CPU which is not as fast as the Intel Comet Lake-H series processor with the MSI laptop above. But still, it clocks between 2.4 and 4.1 GHz and has 4 cores. There are faster Core i5 9th Gen mobile CPUs out there, just not at this price point.

Lenovo has paired the CPU with a discrete Nvidia GTX 1650 4GB graphics card, 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. In terms of upgrades, there isn’t much room to manoeuvre with a max RAM of 16GB, although there is a bay for an HDD if you don’t mind squeaky spinning disks. The battery power is not the best, but it’s a gaming laptop and should be plugged into an outlet during game time.

Overall, the Lenovo Ideapad is not the best gaming laptop under 800 by any means. It would suit someone new to video gameplay as it’s an ideal laptop for games such as Minecraft, GTA, DOOM, and Roblox and also a hatful of games on Steam. But for high fidelity gaming, this laptop may struggle.

4. HP – Pavilion 15.6 Gaming Laptop

Specifications – Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, MB: 4.0 GHz; Display size: 15.6in 120Hz FHD; RAM: 8GB DDR4 (MAX 32GB); Display resolution: 1920 x 1080px; GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB; Storage: 256GB NVMe SSD; Weight: 2.19kg; Operating System: Windows 10

My current gaming machine is an HP laptop and I can vouch for the quality of their components and gaming performance. My laptop also pairs an AMD CPU, which is the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H. Whereas this budget laptop pairs the 6 core Ryzen 5 4600H, which is more than the other budget laptops on this page.

In terms of benchmarks, the AMD Ryzen 5 4600H mobile processor beats the rest (laptops on this page) in gaming performance, as well as power efficiency. Even at single-core tasks, it is neck and neck with its Intel counterparts. (surprising)

The Nvidia GTX1650 in this laptop may not be the fastest graphics chip. But it does make up for that with the 120Hz display and will run many of the current generation games. It also has the potential to play future games for some time to come.

The components are concluded with 8GB RAM (max 32GB), as well as, 256GB NVMe M.2 solid-state drive with room to add more as and when required. This laptop only has 2 USB ports, so you will have to purchase an adapter if you want to connect more devices.

For a gaming laptop under 800, this one is right up there it’s just a shame with the lack of ports. But if you need more you can also grab the same laptop with the new AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU, although that laptop is just over budget.

5. ASUS TUF 17″ Gaming Laptop

Specifications – Processor: Intel Core i5-10300H, MB: 4.5 GHz; Display size: 17in 144Hz FHD; RAM: 8GB DDR4 (MAX 32GB); Display resolution: 1920 x 1080px; GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650Ti 4GB; Storage: 512GB PCIe SSD; Weight: 2.59kg; Operating System: Windows 10

BEST LAPTOP UNDER 850 + 144Hz Display

The final budget laptop on my list is another with a big standout ASUS logo plastered across the lid and it has a sleek and clean chassis that is made from military-grade materials. So, it should withstand a knock or two.

What sets this laptop apart is its 17” form factor compared to the other 15.6-inch laptops above. Also, it boasts a 144Hz IPS FHD display, which is perfect for high frame rates and crystal clear images.

ASUS has included the nippy Intel i5 4 core CPU that runs up to 4.5GHz. Along with an Nvidia GTX1650-Ti GPU. Which, I’m sure these two bad boys will make this laptop an impressive budget laptop under 800.

The components are concluded with 8GB DDR4 2933 MHz RAM and a 512GB PCIe SSD. What is also impressive, is that the RAM and the storage can be upgraded to include 32GB RAM, an additional SSD as well as an HDD. If you can do all that, you will turn this budget laptop into a more sought after mid-range gaming bundle.

Finally, the battery is strong, the cooling is just as strong and there are a plethora of ports including USB Type-C, Wi-Fi 6 and a full RGB keyboard. And if it wasn’t for the other ASUS laptop on this page, this laptop with this spec could be the best gaming laptop under 800 on sale right now.

Buying Guide: 5 Budget Laptop Tips?

800 Budget Laptop Buying Guide

It doesn’t matter what budget you have, always the same components will need to be considered. Although, there are some features that won’t even be mentioned when you look to buy the best gaming laptop under 800

Features like, does it have a thunderbolt 4 port, is the display 240Hz or is it 300Hz. Can you get the laptop with an Nvidia RTX 3080, 3070 or even an RTX 3060 graphics card?

These are the types of questions you would ask if your budget had four figures and not three. However, similar questions need to be asked even if your budget is nearer £800.

Questions like, what CPU does it have, and GPU. How much RAM and storage does it come with? How good is the cooling? Just a few of many important questions to answer.

So, in the next 5 laptop buying tips I will go through the questions you should be asking and offer my point of view. This will help buying a budget gaming laptop for $800 or less, somewhat easier.

1. Choosing the right processor?

While it would be nice to crank up your laptop and enjoy the latest mobile processors from Intel or AMD, especially when boot up times can happen in a second. but, it’s just not possible at this price point.

What is possible is a laptop processor with at least 4 CPU Cores, either an Intel i5 9th or 10th Gen mobile CPU. Ideally an Intel i5 10300H, or an Intel i5 9300H which are both decent in speed and gaming performance. Although, if I had to choose, the former (10300H) would be best because it’s slightly faster across the board.

There are also decent budget laptops under $800 with 6 Core CPUs and will give you that bit more in terms of gaming performance. i.e. the AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, or the newer Ryzen 5600H mobile processors would be good.

Although, a laptop accommodating an AMD 5000 series CPU may be a tad over your 800 budget. But if your pockets are that bit deeper, it will be worth investing in the Ryzen 5000 series laptop, it will be worth its weight in gold.

That’s not to say the 4600H CPU is not up to scratch, because it is. You can also find relatively good laptops with AMD Ryzen 3000 mobile processors. Like the AMD Ryzen 3 3550H and the 3500U, and you would probably pay a bit less. That would be as far as I would go into AMD hardware.

2. Ensure you have enough RAM?

A laptop’s memory allocation is key to running the latest game titles. If your laptop doesn’t have enough RAM your performance will suffer. Not only that, your operating system requires RAM and so does your system vitals software, email, web browser etc etc. So without an adequate amount of RAM you won’t be able to run these programmes simultaneously.

For gaming, a good starting point would be to have 8GB of RAM. My current machine came with 16GB RAM. I was able to run Call of Duty Warzone (Recommended 12GB), and my system’s vitals software, and record my gameplay without experiencing performance issues.

Although roughly 96% of the RAM was being utilized, so I decided to upgrade, from 2 x 8GB to 2 x 16GB RAM. Not because I needed it, I also use my laptop for work where I use graphics and video editing software. So it’s important to me it has enough of what it needs and especially memory.

But not all games require as much, most recommend at least 8GB and why I will always recommend looking at the games you intend to play and what you plan to do with the laptop besides gaming before deciding how much RAM you need.

Another important factor to ensure, can the laptop be upgraded at a later date. There are some budget laptops that will only allow 16 GB RAM in total. Or worse, some budget laptops cannot be upgraded at all. You could be stuck with as little as 4 GB RAM, which is not enough to enjoy a good level of gaming experience.

3. Get the best budget graphics card?

Having the best graphics card in town is the holy grail for every gaming enthusiast, so much so there has been a worldwide shortage as manufacturers failed to keep up with demand in 2020.

But in 2021 mobile GPUs have become more affordable, you can now pick up an Nvidia RTX 30 series laptop for less than $1000. This means, laptops with GTX 16 and RTX 20 series graphics cards have landed in the budget friendly laptop space which makes it possible to enjoy a ray-tracing experience for under $1000.

The best gaming laptop under 800 should have either an Nvidia GTX 1650, 1660, or 1660-Ti mobile GPU. For the record, the latter is slightly more powerful than the GTX 1660 as it has a higher TGP (total graphics power). There are also decent budget machines with the older GTX10 series GPUs, which are still ok for casual gaming.

You may also come across many budget laptops featuring integrated graphics. These laptops are ok for games such as Minecraft, Roblox, and Skyrim. But they are not the best for more mainstream gaming.

That said, if these are the games you plan to use the laptop for, you can save a pretty penny and invest in a laptop with integrated graphics. It’s worth noting, unlike a gaming PC, a laptop is not as flexible when it comes to upgrading, and especially the graphics card and CPU. Therefore, once you make that decision there is no going back.

Games you can play with Integrated graphics

  • Minecraft
  • Roblox
  • Skyrim
  • Hearthstone
  • Counter Strike
  • Rocket League
  • PUBG Lite

4. Budget laptop display and resolution?

Most budget laptops under 800 will have a screen resolution of 1920×1080, which is great for today’s games. And still, possibly the most popular screen resolution used by gamers. The previous go to res for laptops was the 1366×768 resolution which is not as common on the newer machines.

Ok, 1440p or 4K resolutions will make your games look much better, but it will also bump up the price somewhat. A screen res of 1080p is just fine and a FHD (full high definition) over an HD would be best and would give you higher FPS along with decent quality images.

As for the refresh rate, a budget laptop with a 120Hz display would be good, however, there are one or two decent budget laptops knocking about offering 144Hz IPS panels and they would be best.

The ASUS Tuf 17 and the ASUS Dash 15 both have superb 144Hz display’s and should maintain the highest frames rates in game.

As for laptop size, most laptops at this price point will have a 15.6 inch form factor which is a good size for portability, and won’t be too heavy. Some would recommend 17 inch for gaming but my laptop is 15.6-inches and it works just fine for me.

It really just depends on how you plan to use the laptop. If you are traveling a lot, a smaller laptop would be best, a 15.6 or 14 inch laptop. Whereas, if your laptop stays at home a 17 laptop would suit but would be a little pricier.

Overall, a 15.6 inch laptop with a 120Hz/144Hz display with a screen res of 1080p would make the perfect budget laptop under 800. It would offer the best immersive gaming experience and your images would look crisp and smooth.

5. Budget Laptop Storage Solutions?

The amount of storage options a laptop comes with is key to my decision making process. If I can add more storage at some point I am not too fussed how much storage it lands with.

Ideally, you want a laptop with an SSD, with a spare slot to add a second SSD. If the laptop comes with a 512GB SSD, that’s perfect especially for a budget laptop under 800.

Even if the laptop comes with only a 256GB SSD, that is still OK, just as long as more can be added. A laptop with an SSD is much faster than a laptop with an HDD. Which is something I’m not a big fan of, simply because they tend to slow down your system and they can also be distracting.

What I tend to do, and what I recommend is find a budget laptop with 2 SSD slots. Use the stock SSD for booting the system and storing your main games and programmes. Then, purchase a 2nd SSD to use as your secondary storage, and store games you don’t play as often, photo’s, and videos.

This way your system boots up without fuss, and when you save gameplay, move files from one place to another or anything that involves transferring data, it is all done in no time at all.

Games can you play on a budget laptop?

You may be surprised, when I say the best gaming laptop under 800 can run most games, such as, Fortnite, PUBG, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty. The only bummer is you may not get the desired frames to compete in some of the more competitive games, and especially the latest battle royale games.

However, for single player games like Doom, Zelda, The Last of Us, these sorts of games, a budget laptop would be fine. You can also have many hours of fun on game engine platforms, Steam and Stadia.

The five laptops listed above will run most games on relatively decent settings. To give you an idea of their performance. I picked three relatively popular games and gathered data from other laptops users to show you what is possible in terms of frames rates.

Clearly from the table below, the ASUS and the MSI budget laptops can outperform the HP Pavilion and the Lenovo machine. That’s no surprise considering they’re slightly more expensive.

Overall the MSI 17″ laptop consistently beat the lot even the ASUS DASH 15 laptop. Of course there are many other games but this data will give you an idea of what to expect with the best gaming laptop under 800.

It’s worth noting the cooling of the laptop does play a big part in performance, and MSI have a reputation for having superb cooling in their gaming laptop ranges.

Things to Consider when Buying a Budget Laptop?

Choosing a gaming laptop can be stressful, and for some, it may even be as stressful as buying your first house. But it doesn’t have to be.

If you know what you are looking for, the buying process will be easier. And by following my advice below, it will take those fears away and help your find the best gaming laptop under 800.

First, write down the list of games you intend to play, then jump onto their websites (the games) and search for the minimum and recommended system requirements. Then, jot down the required RAM, storage, CPU and graphics card for both. (min and rec).

Look at your list, find the highest recommended and the lowest minimum hardware requirements from each game.

Using the data, you can now see the required spec of laptop you need to consider. If you purchase a laptop below these requirements you will experience stutter, lag, and other performance issues.

Whereas, if you purchase a laptop just above the highest recommended system requirements, one with more RAM, storage, graphics and processing power, you will be one happy gamer as you will run all the games you intend to play.

Consider the size of the laptop

When considering the best gaming laptop under 800 does size really matter? Well, yes because most laptops at this price point will be 15.6″ or smaller.

That said, it’s still an important spec to consider, especially if you’re the travelling type. Gaming laptops are heavier than normal laptops, and especially 17″ gaming machines.

Although the latest high-spec laptops are much thinner and far lighter than before. Also more expensive but with older budget laptops they can be quite weighty. So maybe a 15.6″ laptop would be better suited or even a 14″ machine.

Whereas, if you’re planning to stay put and prefer a desktop replacement, a 17” laptop will be a better choice, the MSI laptop above would be a perfect example of a 17” budget friendly laptop.

In my experience, a 15.6” laptop is perfect for gaming, portability, and graphics and video editing. It really just depends on what you do with the laptop, just remember if you decide on a 17” laptop they are commonly more expensive than a 15.6” or 14” budget laptop.

Consider Laptop Accessories

Gaming on laptops can be so much fun, but for the best experience and especially in games like COD Warzone, Fortnite, PUBG, battle royale games with masses of gunfire and explosions and fast action gameplay you need to have decent laptop accessories.

But don’t worry, you can pick up many amazing budget accessories that will not only improve your gameplay but also help prolong the life of your laptop.

So after finding your perfect budget laptop you will need to start thinking about the best gaming laptop accessories.

For gaming, your trackpad isn’t up to scratch so you will need a decent gaming mouse. You will also need a laptop cooling pad, this will help chill your laptop, and will also act as a comfortable position to rest it on. And yes, laptop cooling pads do work.

Furthermore, the best external keyboard will be a good gaming friend, especially if you plan to play hard and fast action games with plenty of gunfire. If you do, I’m sure you will be smashing your keyboard keys like a crazy madman, an external keyboard will also help prolong your laptops life.

Then there is the sound of gunfire right up close, for that you will need a decent gaming headset. Why not consider a budget wired headset the same one I use which is the Razer Kraken Wired Gaming Headset.

There are many other accessories you can add to improve your gaming, the list could go on. But for starters as long as you have a decent mouse, a budget headset, a cooling pad, and an external keyboard you will be laughing all the way to your first dub.

Final Thoughts…

Hopefully, my research has paid off and you have found yourself the perfect budget friendly laptop? If not, no worries, but I’m sure you will leave my site with a better understanding of what to expect.

As a reminder, a gaming laptop with an Intel i5 4 Core CPU or an AMD Ryzen 5 4000 CPU would be best and will provide the best mainstream performance. In addition, aim for a laptop with a discrete GPU, ideally an Nvidia GTX 16 series variant but if you want to save some money one from Nvidia’s GTX 10 series would be still ok for casual gaming.

When it comes to memory, 4GB is acceptable and will get you by in the so called, easy on the eye video games. But it’s best to have at least 8GB. And for storage, a laptop with a 256 GB SSD will cost less, but ensure there is room to add more, you will need it at some point. Ideally, a laptop with a 512GB SSD, and one that has two SSD slots.

All said and done, at present there aren’t many laptops out there at this price point that will offer better performance than the 5 laptops I have listed above. If there is, please leave a comment below and I would be happy to add the laptop to my post.
